a/n: before reading this, please think fairytale like... the nutcracker or something. :D
Once upon a time, there was a toy shop at the corner of the town. It wasn’t as large as an emporium but it had quite a fair bit of variety. The owner was an old man, who loved these toys very much. He was very warm and friendly and resembled a bear very much. Every toy was unique and there were only one of each in the store.
Propped up at the highest shelf, there was a brown box with a plain transparent plastic in the front. In it, there were two dolls. One female, one male. The male had a high top hat and a purple tailcoat costume, whilst, the female was in a white dress. They were what you called, a marriage doll set. And on the back of the box, there were names that indicated the male as ‘Kyuhyun’ and the female as ‘Ryeowook’.
Every night, when the toys came alive, they would start talking about how their lives were in the past. The rocking horse, would be talking about his adventures in the forest, while the rest of them listened attentively. Sometimes, the little toy soldier would also be relating his misfortunes causing much laughter among the rest.
Christmas was nearing and one by one, the toys in the shop started to lessen. When the turtle plushie, who was Ryeowook’s best friend was sold, she cried that night. “Hush, don’t cry Ryeowookie. We will all go separate ways one day…” Kyuhyun comforted her. “Except for us, because we’re always together… Right?” Ryeowook said, sobs slowly stopping. “That’s right.” Kyuhyun said giving Ryeowook’s hand a squeeze. Ryeowook smiled at him, relieved that she would be safe next to Kyuhyun.
On the eve of Christmas, when the shop was almost closing, there was suddenly a jiggling of the bells at the door. A man donned in a black coat, with much snow covered on it, went over to take the brown box on the shelf. He placed it on the counter and took out his wallet.
“I’ll take this. How much is this?” He asked.
“It’ll be $15.” The old man said. “Doing last minute shopping for your little one?”
“Yeahhh. Have been too busy recently to do any shopping.” He said as he passed the bills.
“I see. Have a Merry Christmas!” The old man said as he waved to the man, chuckling a little. “Ah, and to think I used to be like that.”
--- --- --- ---
In the brown paper bag…
“Kyuhyun…” Ryeowook nudged to this doll at her side. “Where do you think we’re going? We’re finally getting bought…”
“Somewhere where there’ll be children. I overheard the man and the shop owner saying about last minute shopping for his kid.” Kyuhyun said with a confident smile.
“Ah, I hope so…” Ryeowook fidgeted.

Soon, the two dolls in there could feel themselves moving from place to place. They couldn’t see though, since the box was being wrapped with wrapping paper. Finally, they were opened 2 days after they were bought and were greeted with a girl with a bright smile. “Wow! These are so cute! Thank you Daddy for this! I love you!” The girl said as she placed the box down and ran to the man that bought the doll set, giving him a tight hug.
Ever since then, the two dolls were always being carried around by the little girl. They soon learned that she was called Sungmin and loved pink things. Her hairbands were pink, her clothes were pink, everything of hers were pink. Sungmin brought Kyuhyun and Ryeowook to school and played with them during her playtimes. (well, she’s only 6/7)
One day, while she was playing quietly by herself as always, another boy came up to her and started talking.
“Hello! Don’t you feel cold here?” The boy said.
“Nope… it isn’t.” Sungmin said, eyes not leaving her precious dolls.
“Okay…” The boy said and took a seat beside Sungmin.
“Oh, aren’t you the new kid over here?” Sungmin asked, finally realizing that the boy had sat next to her and was trying to talk to her.
“Oh, yes. That’s right. I’m -“
“Jongwoon.” Sungmin said grinning. “Everyone knows your name because the teacher has been talking about a new kid that would be joining us from today.”
“Really?” Jongwoon blushed a little. “What about -“
“I’m Sungmin. Nice to meet you.” Sungmin said as gave her cheerful smile.
It became quiet again and Sungmin continued playing with her dolls while Jongwoon looked at them.
“I see you love playing with them.” Jongwoon said awkwardly.
“Yeah I do!” Sungmin said enthusiastically. “This is Kyuhyun,” Sungmin said as she picked up the male doll. “And this is Ryeowook.” She said picking up the other one. “They’re married so they have to be together wherever they go.”
Ryeowook felt so safe after hearing those words from Sungmin, knowing that she would never separate her and Kyuhyun.
--- --- --- ---
A few years passed, Sungmin was now ten. She still brought Kyuhyun and Ryeowook in her school bag. It was during lunch that she lost Ryeowook. Her bag that was on her table was accidentally knocked onto the floor, making Ryeowook fallout from the pouch.
“Ouch!” Ryeowook exclaimed in pain.
“Ryeowook! Quick! Take my hand!” Kyuhyun said as he reached his hand out as near as possible to Ryeowook.
Ryeowook tried to grab on but it was too late. Sungmin had picked up her bag and left for the next class, leaving Ryeowook on the floor. Ryeowook couldn’t move then, but in her heart she was so scared. Kyuhyun on the other hand could only peek from the small hole as he find himself getting further and further away from Ryeowook.
The bell for the next class rang. Jongwoon came into the class and rushed over to the empty table. As he dragged his chair out, he noticed a small figurine below the table. He picked it up, not wanting to damage it since it could be one of the students using the table in one of the previous classes. Hey, this looks familiar, Jongwoon thought to himself. AH!! It’s Sungmin’s toy! She said that this one was called Ryeowook… or something like that. I better return it to her… and then I’ll be able to talk to her at the same time. :’) Great job Jongwoon~ He mentally praised himself.
Sadly, Jongwoon had tried to approach Sungmin many times but wasn’t able to. He tried waiting for her at her classroom the next day but she never appeared. He tried asking around her classmates but many of them didn’t even seem to know there was such a person in the class.
Sungmin, had to leave the country that day because her father was changing working locations. She cried when she found out that Ryeowook was lost. Even when she tried retracing her steps, she couldn’t find Ryeowook. But of course she couldn’t. Ryeowook was safely kept in Yesung’s bag.
--- --- --- ---
Years later, Sungmin came back to the country. She still had Kyuhyun with her, often wondering where Ryeowook had been. Kyuhyun too, had been worrying about Ryeowook. Whether she was happy, was she being well taken care of. Ryeowook was placed in Jongwoon’s room, beside his table lamp on his desk. Ryeowook would think if Sungmin still kept Kyuhyun, what would happen if she was still with Kyuhyun. Did Kyuhyun miss her?
Sungmin didn’t move back to her old house, instead she now stayed somewhere else. Compared to her old house, this one was much smaller. One day, Sungmin was at the backyard, sitting on the swing. As the swing went higher and higher, she was able to see the backyard next to hers. There was a boy that looks like the same age as her, ears plugged with earphones and holding a garden hose, watering the flowers. Hey, that looks like Jongwoon, Sungmin thought.
“HEY! HEY!” Sungmin shouted, trying to wave her hands to attract the other’s attention. “JONGWOON!”
Jongwoon finally turned his head to faint sound of shoutings of his name. Taking off his earphones and turning off the hose, he turned to find out that a girl around his age was on a swing and was swinging vigorously. She looks familiar… Jongwoon thought. OH! Sungmin!
“HEY! SUNGMIN!” Jongwoon shouted in glee. “UH, CAN YOU GO TO THE FRONT OF THE HOUSE. IT’S EASIER TO TALK THERE.”
Sungmin gave another shout that she had noted it and rushed to the front. Jongwoon, on the other hand, went to his room to take Ryeowook and rushed back down to the front of the house.
As soon as Jongwoon saw Sungmin, he gave her a big grin.
“How have you been?” He said, the smile never leaving his face. “And, here.” He gave Ryeowook to Sungmin.
Sungmin’s eyes lit up instantly, hands grabbing Ryeowook. “I haven’t seen her in ages! When I lost her, I cried so badly. I retraced my steps in the school but I still couldn’t find it. Where did u find her?” Sungmin questioned.
“Haha… I’ll tell you over a cup of drink. Do you mind?” Jongwoon asked warily.
“Sure. But before that…” Sungmin said and raced upstairs to her room, and put Ryeowook beside Kyuhyun on her table. And with that, she went back outside, proceeding to a coffee house nearby with Jongwoon.
Meanwhile at Sungmin’s table…
“Hello. I missed you.” Ryeowook said.
“I know. I missed you too.” Kyuhyun said, giving Ryeowook a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
