In an epiphany-filled experience similar to the time I discovered my favorite color was actually red, not purple (my life is peppered with amazing spontaneous adventures of just this sort), I recently treated myself to a meal out and my life was altered because of it ( Read more... )

Heee. I still prefer medium, but only because I am bothered by the redness of the meat. I am sad, however, that you don't like broccoli. :(

Congratulations on your epiphany!

I actually do like broccoli, I just don't like broccoli served by restaurants because I don't trust it.

If you've ever prepared broccoli the way that observant Jews are required to prepare it, you find out very quick that there are all sorts of small bugs living in the florettes. You can soak them ahead of time in a solution of water with a bit of vinegar or salt, and all the black specks gradually float to the top. It's scary. And even then it doesn't get all of them and you search by hand, very carefully.

I know that your average Applebee's doesn't go to as strict levels of preparing their broccoli as a kosher restaurant would (it's a huge hassle and takes too much time and effort) so it stands to reason that their broccoli is still filled with the little bugs, which I have no desire to eat. Most people's broccoli is like that, unfortunately.

Oh dear. :( You're making me not want to eat broccoli any more.

Are the bugs always there? Why do I not see them?

The bugs are almost always there and they're too small to be seen by just a cursory glance. But when you really start looking for them, especially when you have the raw vegetable, you can find them. They look like little dark specks. And you have to look within the florettes to find them usually. Anyway, it's usually not worth the effort when other vegetables taste just as good and are much easier to clean. But broccoli, cauliflower, asparagus and the like are harder to clean thoroughly because of their florettes.

Your icon is making me giggle. It's also terribly appropriate.
