How do you know the event did not already happened and Marty is merely reliving time after the fact. If his future self did not go back in time to the 1800's he could not have helped Doc. And Marty was already in the 1950's over 50 years after he helped Doc on the train. But if Doc did not need his help then the letter would never been sent. Think about in the first movie where Marty watched himself escape the terrorists while Doc was shot. He ran up to help Doc only to realize that Doc saved himself because he read the letter Marty wrote. But how do you know that Doc was not already wearing the vest at the start of the film because he already knew what was going on and the only reason he was surprised to see them drive up was because he was going off on a limb becasue he was questioning the whole thing to begin with. But he replied, "What the hell" and went along wearing the suit and he might have freaked out becasue he knew Marty was not protected. And the whole train thing. They return to the exact second they left from so that no time went by. Marty already helped Doc on the train. But he never would have if the letter was not sent.
But it's seemed to me that in the Back to the Future world, the things in the present don't happen until they go back to change it in the past. For example, the picture of the clock and Doc in it from the 1800s was in the library. In the new version of history after Marty went back, Marty was also in the picture. If things happened that way, Marty would have also already have seen himself in the picture and known he was to go back. He just saw Doc, and then went back and changed history.
And Marty was already in the 1950's over 50 years after he helped Doc on the train. But if Doc did not need his help then the letter would never been sent.
