I hadn't bothered going to work in a while. I doubted anyone else would have been there. Even if I had meaningful work to do and was paid for it, money was useless. We were just sort of wandering around my parents' house. We weren't going to stay there, but we didn't have anywhere else to go, either. I considered trying to hide some things so that the bandits might overlook them when they reached this neighborhood, but I knew it was useless and I didn't bother. Taking things with us wouldn't do any good, either. It as just as likely that we'd be robbed in person as that the house would be looted. Both were inevitable.
It was a little frustrating to think there was basically no such thing as material possessions for us anymore, but it was just the way things were. There was no sense in complaining about our situation, just as there was no point in planning to go anywhere or do anything specific. We'd simply wander on foot through the hills outside the city.
