Things you can make: body guard (1 layer heavy denimor canvas lining, brocade weight fabric facing, Upper inner arm must be covered to 1/3rd the way down the arm. This, according to some dons, will pass a punch test. Or 4oz leather.) Hood (same as doublet) Clothes (Although you can wear broadcloth pants and long-sleeved shirt so not a big deal)
Things you probably need to buy: Mask (Triplette, just easiest. ~85 for their decent quality mask) Gorget (possible to make. But unless you have a metalworker you'll end up with hard plastic or leather.) Weapon (triplette. You can get a nice one from them for like ~150) Gloves (I bought my motorcycle gauntlet length gloves for like ~30) Footwear (whatever is comfy so long as no skin is showing).
My recommendations on clothes: Choose to be a "Boy" on the field. Why? You probably have a long sleeved shirt and harem pants already. As well as boots. You just need to make yourself a doublet as a body guard.
You can go low end, or you can go nuts. For now I'd say you should try it out and come to practices and wear some loaner stuff while there to see if you like it and what you like.
