On his rare weekends off, Colby jogs through the park near his apartment. Grabs a coffee from Starbucks and walks home.
If it's been particularly good at work, or bad, he may also include a muffin. It's his routine. The army taught him about routine.
He's been doing this for over three years before it gets broken by a flash of red hair, a shy smile, and the deepest brown eyes he's ever seen.
Now he buries his fingers in her red hair, kisses her smile, loses himself in her eyes, and never keeps a routine on his own again.

“Quit fidgeting” David whispers..
“This is strangling me” Colby hisses back “I feel like I'm gonna pass out”
“Your bow tie is fine” David continues “besides aren't you the one who opted for formal wear”
The only word of Colby's mumbled response that David catches is 'Mother'. The music fills the small church.
Colby swallows, and turns to face his bride.
The sight of her red hair tumbling over her shoulders to meet the most beautiful gown he's ever seen, drives all his nerves away.
He smiles at her. “I Love you” he mouths.

Charlie stops mid-equation, marker pen poised in midair, as Colby bursts into the room his face split by a huge grin.
“Cole?” Don inquires with his own grin. Colby pulls items from the bag he is holding and starts putting them in front of people.
Liz picks hers up. “A Cigar?” she frowns at Colby.
Still grinning Colby hands another cigar to Larry “Am I to assume the traditional reason for handing out cigar's” he asks, the grin becoming an infection. “Yep” Colby finally speaks, cigar held out to David “I'm gonna be a Daddy”

He's in the office when the call comes. An unrecognized number on his cell, he flips it open.
“Granger” Focusing only on the voice at the other end, his surroundings fade away.
“What?” he shouts, not noticing David suddenly at his side, catching his elbow as his legs buckle.
“Too Soon.” he whispers dropping the phone at his feet. Nikki scoops it up to listen as the voice repeats it's message.
“Come on Granger” she orders. “You need to be with your wife.”
In the elevator Nikki answers David's unasked question. “The baby's coming”

Colby stares at the figure in the incubator. A baby no bigger than his hand lies there, a diaper the size of a dollar bill loose about the body. Tubes with tiny needles pushed into the thinest of veins. The hiss of the machine inflating minuscule lungs with oxygen. A mask pulled over eyes to protect from the blinding heat lamps in the roof of the plastic box. A pink bonnet that would be more suited to warming a boiled egg gives the only indication of gender. Tears flow freely and the name label reading “Granger” blurs before him.

They sit across from a paediatrician, Colby gripping his wife's hand as if it's the only thing in the room. His ears are buzzing, random phrases of the doctors speech filtering through the haze. 12 weeks premature, starved of oxygen, brain damage, unknown development, not expected to walk or talk. Leaflets of help groups and residential homes are thrust into his hand. He glances at his wife's red rimmed eyes, 96 days they've been doing this. He doesn't think they can do it much longer. He catches the doctor's last sentence “you can take her home” and he smiles.

There is no party for his daughters third birthday. The day passes as usual. He runs through the muscle exercises with her, feeds her, dresses her, talks to her, and plays with her while watching her mother move silently in the background, his routine now familiar. The only change today was that his wife left them. He didn't have the heart to make her stay, he hadn't seen her smile in years, her eyes now blank, the lines on her face aging her. Later as he shared a beer with David in the back yard, all he felt was relief.

For the last five years Colby has kept a routine. He leaves his desk job, drives six miles to the home he had her placed in. He enters the day room, and crosses to her specially made chair. She can sit up this way; ordinarily she wouldn't be able to hold her head up on her own. Her left hand curls limply in her lap but she greets him with a toothy smile, reaching out to him with her right arm. He wraps his arms around her. “Da” she grunts at him. It's the only word she can say.
