The Drowned Piano

I heard a fascinating local ghost story, this afternoon.

A couple of kilometres out of our town is a popular local swimming hole on the Meander River, called Egmont. It takes its name from a venerable property, built in 1838, that adjoins the river.

Before the bridge was built, the river had to be crossed by a ford - which is right where the swimming spot is.

The story goes that a piano was being carted to the homestead, and as it was fording the river, the cart tipped. The piano ended lost in the deep pool below the ford.

At some time as well, a young girl died at the homestead.

On some nights, it is said, her ghost can be heard, playing the piano still lost under the waters of the deep, dark pool.
