Chapter 1:
It's his first day on the job; he really hoped he could be less nervous. Even though he passed the trial period at the main company by taking small cases, but this was his first official position at the branch office. On top of that, he was to be assigned a partner. It would be nice if they could get along.
Sungmin looked at the business card of the branch office again before taking the elevator to the sixth floor of the building. Pushing open the double glass doors, he found himself in the small reception area. Behind the reception desk, sat a man around his age, with bleached hair and glasses. He walked up to the brown desk and lightly knocked on the surface with his knuckles to get the other's attention.
"Um... excuse me. My name is Lee Sungmin. I'm reporting here for my first day."
"Oh hello!" The man pushed up his glasses and gave him a charming smile, "so you are finally here. Just a second please."
Sungmin nodded and watched as the man picked up his phone and dialled a number, "hey, Yoochun-ah, is hyung here? His partner arrived already.... oh really? Well, can you show him around first then? Yup. Ok."
As the receptionist hung up and turned to the computer, Sungmin turned around and swept his eyes around the small room. The walls where all white and there weren't any paintings on them. To one side, there was a sofa and a small square coffee table. On the other side there was a door, which led to the inside. Other than that, the office was simple and plain.
"Um, Sungmin?"
"Ah. yeah?" He quickly turned back to the receptionist.
"I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Park Jungmin, part-time receptionist and part-time exorcist."
"It's nice to meet you." Shaking hands, Sungmin returned Jungmin's smile as he finally felt less nervous. He was just about to say something else as the side door to the office opened, and another person stepped out.
Jungmin got up from his desk and walked up to the newcomer, putting an arm around his shoulders, "And this is Park Yoochun."
Sungmin gave a slight bow to Yoochun as the other put a rather shy smile on his face.
"It's nice to meet you, I'm Lee Sungmin."
"Same here."
"Alright you two, get into the office then. I'm gonna call Eeteuk." Before either of them could protest, Jungmin grabbed him with his free arm and steered the two people towards the door, opening it and shoving them in.
The two had no choice but to squeeze through the narrow hallway.
He would have never thought the office would be so big. There were more than a dozen of cubicles arranged around the place, each with had its own desk, chair, cabinet, bookshelf and computer. There was something strange about this view though, and he couldn't quite pick it out.
"Yeah, I know it looks weird, but all the desks are actually used. It's just that this job is more on-site if anything, so most people we hardly see them in the office." Yoochun turned around and answered his unspoken question as if reading his mind. It sort of sounds ridiculous that this kind of business actually look like something of a normal office job in a building.
"Ah, really?"
"Yup. Right now there's only three people in the office. You just saw two, and the third one is your partner."
"Is he out?"
"Yup, meeting a client. But should be back soon."
They stopped at the desks in the corner, and Yoochun pointed to the one beside the full sized windows, "this is where you will be sitting, and the one across from yours is where your partner sits."
Following the other's finger, Sungmin clearly saw the other desk with the nameplate "Park Jungsu" labelled at one side of the cubicle wall.
"The kitchen is on the other side of this office, as well as the restrooms. Sorry I can't stay with you any longer, I put someone on hold on the phone for quite a while already."
Watching Yoochun sheepishly scratching his head, Sungmin immediately waved his hands, "ah, it's alright. You should get back to what you were doing. I'll just walk around until...Jungsu comes back."
"Thanks a lot then!"
He unconsciously smiled as he watched the other's back as it disappeared amongst the cubicles. He took a seat on his desk and looked around the office once more. Sungmin already liked it here, at least the people were pleasant. It came as a surprise though, how all of them are around his age. He would have thought most exorcists were older, but then again, those were probably the biased priest images from movies he watched. A bit curious about whom his partner was going to be, he found himself going towards Park Jungsu's desk.
Maybe there's a picture or something like that?
It felt like he was intruding, but he poked his head inside the cubicle anyway, and his eyes automatically landed on a black frame on the desk that was set to one side. Sungmin picked it up.
It was a picture of three people, taken most likely at an amusement park. Sungmin could recognize the faces of both Jungmin and Yoochun in it, although they looked younger in the photo. So the third person with the black-rimmed glasses and the dimples must be Park Jungsu? Jungsu has a really nice smile. From the picture, he looks like a nice person too. These three must be close.
Didn't they say their last names were Park...? Are they...
"It's weird that all siblings goes into the same company, isn't it? Those two in the picture are my younger brothers."
A sudden voice spoke from his back, Sungmin turned around immediately, almost dropping the picture frame in his hands. To his bigger surprise, the speaker was none other than Jungsu himself.
"I... I didn't mean to intrude... " Sungmin fumbled to put the frame back where it was and quickly bowed to the other, "I'm Lee Sungmin, your will-be partner."
"Haha, don't worry about it, that frame was specially placed there for you."
"Huh?" Sungmin watched as Jungsu walked pass him back to his desk with a mysterious smile on his face.
"As you know I'm Park Jungsu, but everyone calls me Eeteuk, so you can call me the same thing if you like. Do you like the view from your desk? I especially got it for you since you like to sit next to windows."
"How'd you know... I mean I like windows yes. Thank you..."
"Good then. But I'm afraid you won't get to enjoy it that much. We got your first official case today."
"Oh really? .... WHAT?!"
