I've done a lot today, which could explain why I'm ready to take a nap now. Housework plus laundry, in addition to weeding the beds around my roses and trimming the dying leaves off each bush. Sometimes just brushing a leaf or a stem caused it to fall from the plant. The weeks of rain have been unkind to the leaves, which are yellowing from overwatering. After an April of just endless waves of blossoms, there is hardly a sign of a new bud to be seen. The large wild plant has a very little new growth on it, though, and the peace rose is taller. My boyfriend, taking a break from seeding the lawn and drinking beer, is tacking together the bricks that form rings around each plant, making two semicircles that can be taken apart for weeding and mowing as needed. Genius. After that's done, there will be mulching. I bought a small wire trellis to redirect the peace rose that is growing northward instead of up. A rebel against heliotropism. My legs itch from kneeling unevenly on a foam cushion and on the grass to do the weeding, and mosquitoes and a few other biting insects got me in several places.
Saw the new Star Trek movie; enjoyed it.
I started and finished Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire yesterday evening. It was pretty good. I will track down Wicked next. Ahh, books that were popular years ago that I've never gotten around to reading. I vowed to end my literary abstention and browsed the fiction section of the library yesterday. I picked up The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn by Robin Maxwell (I already love biography of historical women, so a novelization might be worth a shot) and Nobody's Girl by Antonya Nelson. After this, I promise to make a dent in the pile of (mostly borrowed) books by my nightstand.
Need to go grocery shopping is at war with urge to order Chinese, take a shower, and watch House episodes for the rest of the night.
