The Stargate,
Stargate Universe,
Lt. Scott, Merry Christmas
Canon Point: End of "Pathogen" (2x4), wherein the Nakai DNA in Chloe is starting to make itself apparent
Setting: Several thousand years ago, an advanced civilisation invented a means to travel immense spaces in mere seconds. A large ring made of a non-Earth material, the Stargate is similar to a rotary phone which dials planets where another connecting Stargate is waiting. The chevrons on the Stargates correspond to certain star patterns in whatever point of the galaxy they reside, so your trip back will have a different dialling sequence than your trip there. There are several types of gates, and when they connect a huge burst of energy shoots from the ring and settles into a glowing event horizon which can be penetrated.
Would you like to know more? The Stargate uses an address combined of seven chevrons, six to point out the destination (imagine six points of a cube) and a seventh to indicate the point of origin. To go farther, some groups in the Stargate universe used an eighth chevron to reach an entirely new galaxy. In Stargate Universe, they use a planet's unstable core to power up a ninth chevron, which is the farthest anyone has ever travelled through a Stargate. It unexpectedly brings them to a ship, the Destiny, which is on a mission at the time of their arrival. Originally meant to be an unmanned mission, a sister ship was sent out ahead of time to drop these "Destiny gates" which would also record data on the planets and send it back to the Destiny.
The Destiny's mission, which is found out some time early in the second season, is based on a unique frequency which is heard in WMAP probes: the CMBR, the left over radiation from the Big Bang. It is seeking its origin point. Lt. Scott is one of the members, although not originally.
I can expand further, but I'm apt to deliver in brevity. edit And thus I do.
revision
Movie - They found one Stargate in Giza Plateau, which contained a cartouche with but a single address. After many months of trying decipher what they thought was hieroglyphs, they figured it out using a computer to dial. Typically, you need what's nicknamed a DHD (dial-home-device) which is a circular panel of corresponding Gate symbols. There they found a peaceful humanoid people controlled by a fearful creature named Ra (basing off the Egyptian sun god). He appeared to be a boy, but he was in fact alien. While the mission was initially to destroy the Gate if they found anything dangerous, they instead destroyed Ra and freed the people.
SG-1 - Stargate Command was initially developed for the purpose of using Stargate teams to explore other worlds, most of which had their address within a cartouche (whose primary monarch was titled to Ra). The SGC was bade to control and protect it, but it was activated one day by a Goa'uld. In SG-1, they changed the physiology of the Goa'uld, where they are now snake-like and aquatic, and overtake humanoid races by jutting through the skin at back of the neck and coiling around the spinal cord (and partially into the brain). Since that day, the SGC has had two prime directives: peaceable exploration in search of new technologies and weapons, and the seeking out of alien races who pose a threat to all of Earth and other peaceful people.
For a long time, the SGC and the Goa'uld were about even. One day Earth would take a hit, then the Goa'uld. Their greatest adversary, a Goa'uld system lord called Apophis had the horrific knack of always coming back from what the Tau'ri (the name for Earth humans) thought was a victory. When he was defeated, the scariest, Anubis, arose. He was half-ascended, and to ascend was an Ancient thing, whereby the physical body is shed so the consciousness takes pure energy form. While the SGC managed to gain new technology from the few giving races, they managed to use an alien technology to finally be rid of the Goa'uld once and for all. An Ancient weapons system in Antarctica got rid of him.
Following shortly after were the Ori. One of the greatest desires for the SGC was to meet and talk to the Ancients, the builders of the Stargates and the weapon system, along with many other things. When the Ori claimed they were gifted by the Ancients, the SGC posed as friends. It was clear the Ori were not interested in peaceable relations, and were defeated by their own Ancient-formed weapons, a system called Supergates. They are simply huge Stargates in space, composited of energetic panels which sit in the path of a nearby event horizon.
Atlantis - Sometime during the middle of the problems with the Goa'uld, Anubis, they found a mention in some Ancient text of a city sunken into water, Atlantis. This was the epicentre of the Ancients' evolution and the quintessential nerding spot for Ancient fanboys. It was believed to be the city in which they actually resided, and was submerged to the (very deep) ocean floor for the purpose of salvaging themselves against a horrific enemy, the Wraith. These creatures feed on other creatures (preferably humanoid, because they enjoy watching them suffer) and can live for an extremely long time. When the Wraith, long ago after the Ancients submerged Atlantis, began running out of food (over-consuming the humanoids), they went into a long hibernation, until it was time for them to be awaken and feed yet again. Unfortunately, they were awoken on accident.
The SGC had to figure out that reaching Atlantis took the dialling of an eighth chevron, which brought them outside of the Milky Way entirely. An entirely new set of symbols and addresses were available to them, and going to and from Earth was a pain, even for their fastest ships, which were gifted to them by the Asgard before their untimely self-demise. They therefore created a waystation, a place where decontamination and reports could happen, which was reached by a time-delay method through many thousands of Stargates' wormholes interconnected.
The Ancients ascended elsewhere, but they left behind many technologies leading to the study of. They had a machine which made the affected person much smarter and (at some point), telekinetic, basically to see if they could figure out what should happened before their time. They also provided things such as nanites and some adverse diseases to see if they could force their bodies into the way of evolving quicker than was natural. They even created a way to turn the Wraith into humans to see if they could reduce their numbers. But in the end, they were too busy to fight the Wraith, and it was apparent that, since the Wrait were basically ageless (as long as they fed), they would keep coming, and coming, and coming. In a parallel universe episode, a Wrait caught on Earth made a way to send a message to penetrate dimensions, which sent the coordinates for Earth to Wraiths in all sorts of dimensions. They were destroyed by a dimension-hopping explosive (something the Ancients couldn't quite do, so that says something for the SGC and we Tau'ri!)
Universe - The SGC plays a slightly different role, I think. Or rather, they don't mention anything similar to the roles in SG-1 and Atlantis. And the Ancients play an even degraded role in Universe. The portion of the SGC we see are focusing on unlocking the ninth chevron in an Ancient address they found. The conditions have to be perfect, and I believe the Ancients tried this once or had the technology to do so, as the SGC used the power of geothermal energy in an unstable planet. When it blew up and the SGC crew on the planet were forced to the unknown address, they landed on the progenitor of the Stargate system, the Destiny ship. In my opinion, this is the highest accomplishment of the Ancients! It was an automated system to establish Stargates in new places and gather important data for their inhabitance. The ship knows when its out of air, out of water, out of food, etc. And the SGC crew on it have a rough time trying to control it, when technically, they don't have to.
The homeworld SGC and the crew aboard the Destiny have it rough. The SGC thinks this is the best find of anything Ancient they've ever found, aside from Atlantis, and they want to bring it back, along with the crew alive. But the crew is having a rough go of it because they are so far and physically unable to reach them so following order is sort of like "Well, we're alone out here, so you have no say." In fact, there is much splitting of the crew, some that side with the brilliant scientist whose endeavours are to follow Destiny to her destination, the CMBR epicentre, and some side with the "save all" colonel who wants to get the ship to go back, or at least dial the Gate.
As we reach about, I'd say, halfway through the second season, the SGC has nearly no contact at all. The occasional report to Earth, the occasional thumbs up at a decision, but they no longer give them orders at that point.
Since the Ancients don't have a direct connection to the show, they learn things via the ship and the leftover technology. Basically, the ship was made to scour this part of the universe, (the show partly takes place in-between two galaxies, an epically long space), drop Gates to habitable worlds (or worlds with things Destiny may need one day), and finally in the end, find the source of the CMBR, which would have been the highlight of their life had they not ascended and learnt everything thereafter anyhow.
Personality: He's first a good boy, and second a soldier. He's last a lover, but he can perform that just as well. As a good soldier, he's trained well in that he can take charge in a stressful situation and direct people. However, he's not meant and he doesn't like leadership. When people begin to freak out, it wears on him. He's too nice and honest to really command people who are not underneath his military command. He's a resourceful soldier (as they should all be) and he has the typical male bravado of wanting to run into danger in the ever-so-slim hopes of gainging their single saving grace...and succeeding, most of the time. In an alternate timeline, he survived freak alien death twice. As a human, he's good at surviving. But then, that's what he's been trained for.
Not as a soldier, Matthew Scott is Christian. He was raised by a priest, and although Scott had planned on becoming a priest, himself, he is not preachy. He may say the occasional prayer in a time of gravity, or say to a stranger "God will help you", but if they were to frown upon the idea or say "I don't believe in God," the first thing Scott would say was "Oh, okay. Well, I'm sure I can help you some way." (Extrapolation, "Darkness".) Additionally, Scott adapted well to Destiny and made friends wherever he went. He is your typical Type-A personality.
As far as love goes, like most stressed-out soldier guys, he's got more physical relationships than he has relationships based on feelings, trust, and what-have-you. His very first girl was something he regretted, but it turned out that while he thought she aborted the baby, she didn't. He has a son, named after him, which he has conflicted feelings about (surprise, fear, love, concern, &ct.) His second girl he's guilty over because he left her when the Icarus base was being bombed, and so there is some leftover feelings between the two. His third girl, however, seemed to show us what he was really capable of: support, consideration, the soft side, etc. Chloe is his wife in an alternate timeline, so I assume he has the good capacity like all human beings to find their soulmate...even if he had to hurt a bunch of others along the way.
His weaknesses lie within his esteem. Although he's a well-trained soldier, could probably take charge if he had to, and is a good person to all he meets, usually giving even the bad guys a second chance (Exacting, "Justice", or thereabouts), he doesn't believe he's all that fabulous. He's hindered by past mistakes that, while suppressing them most of the time, add and important block in his self-assessment. He feels a little weak and insecure due to issues in the past, the two major ones being his priest "father" and impregnation of his 16-year-old girlfriend. A recent mistake he feels he's made is with his recent relationship with Chloe and her blueberry DNA change. These major problems, not small and suffused through life, cause him to feel almost helpless in some situations (Extrapolation, "Air Pt.1"). This also causes his fear of assuming control.
While I don't think anyone would call Scott intelligent, he has been known to display wisdom beyond his years (Exacting, "Malice"). He also has outstanding morals which do not waver, as well as an inhuman inability to lie. He may do a white lie when the stake are high, but beyond that, he finds it demoralising and unfair (Exacting, every time they ask him to be dishonest and he gives him >:| that look) and I believe it would stress him out.

Appearance: I estimate his height at 182cm or so (6ft), but I could wager some 10cm less or more. He's very, er, normal. Loose, muscular build, causcasian, dirty blond hair in military cut (partial growth), green eyes...Ah, the eyes almost look kind of sad at times, and as he's a soldier his facial hair and body shape are well kept. He wears his BDUs often. I assume he's ectomorph with a high protein intake. I believe at times he has somewhat poor posture due to his ability to walk with martyrdom, but it's slight and when his commanding officer enters the room he's on his toes, as it were. He has somewhat large ears and large, guitar-player hands. I'm not sure how to describe Scott. He's just...average. :|

Log Sample: Lt. Scott was leaving just like he normally did. He gave Chloe a kiss and laughed at a joke Eli made. He frowned at Rush and followed Young's orders. He walked through the event horizon in the Stargate, hoping to ignore what he was leaving behind and find something interesting, like those white flowers, on the planet he was headed.
Instead-CRASH!!
As soon as he was through the wormhole, he descended on a mountain of metal, sliding roughly and tumbling quite a ways. He shielded his face and tucked as tight as he could. Large pieces of who knows what were still being deposited, so as soon as he could stand up he bolted through the junk to solid ground. Narrowly avoiding what looked like a ship's engine, something like a Boeing turbine, Scott thought, he crash rolled out onto the flat ground and breathed a sigh of relief.
Definitely not what he was expecting.
He was covered in some kind of dusty material that smelled like burnt metal, and even silver shavings clung to his BDU. Dusting himself off, he did not see the humanoid machine sauntering up to him.
"Hell-"
And in his jumpy state, his gun was in the android's face in a split second.
"Oh, geez!" Scott breathed a sigh of relief, putting his weapon down, believing this droid to be something more human than machine. "Sorry, had a bad landing."
"I'm here to present you with the Sacrosanct URB." The droid held up a feeble bracelet, translucent and blinking.
"Uh...URB?"
A whirring noise from the droid, then, "Universal Relay Band. All Sacrosanct inhabitants are required to wear one."
"Sacrosanct?" came Scott's question, forgetting to ask about the "required" part he was sure not to like.
"Here," the droid replied, and held up its mechanical hand, and while Scott looked about at its immensity, the droid deftly snapped the bracelet to his eft wrist, just above his watch.
"Hey!" Scott said, pulling away and again aiming his gun at the droid.
"Enjoy," the droid replied, bowing slightly, and promptly walking away.
Scott's brows fell in confusion, as well as his gun. He looked to the bracelet curiously and thought Sacrosanct?.
As if on cue, three low tones belted out, which drew Scott's attention, and he heard a somewhat inviting, but cold, voice tell him: Welcome to Sacrosanct. Please watch your step.
Yup. Definitely not the right place.
Network Sample: [After much flipping of his wrist and poking at random buttons, Scott's face appears in the holographic feedback, and he smiles keenly to himself.]
Guess Eli rubbed off on me.
[He then situates himself to appear fuller and more as if he knew what he was doing. He quickly glances down to see the tiny bracelet he just received from an automaton, and on very interesting grounds, blinking slightly. The HUD is something of interest, but he'll have to come back to it.]
Ah, Lieutenant Matthew Scott, U.S. Air Force, 28. I don't know if anyone is even seeing this, but while on a mission aboard Destiny, I went through the Stargate and I ended up...here.
[He stands back to show the pile of junk and scraps behind him, still looming behind him despite the distance he created between he and the junkyard.]
Definitely on another ship, big-I don't know-junkyard type thing here. Can anybody tell me where I am? Got bruised a little on entry, but I'm hoping with this much technology there will be sent-
[He's interrupted by a creak of noise to his left, which he quickly responds with the aim of his weapon strapped to his belt. Looking back to the bracelet's interface, Scott quickly flicks his wrist, and the transmission ends.]
