Okay so I delved into names for a bit and I've come up with three tentative first-name choices.
Hibiki (響) - Means "echo", my tentative favorite
Minoru (実) - Means "truth", kind of fits with Shinri, which I will expand on in a bit
Shinobu (忍) - Means "endure" (which was the basis of the word "shinobi", donchaknow)
Now, I wanted something simple but dramatic for Haibara, since, strange reasoning with female detectives aside, her name means "ash field sorrow" and come on, that is overly dramatic. It practically screams "I HAVE A SAD AND TRAUMATIC PAST", or really weird parents. So, I wanted something with DRAMATIC MEANING for Haibara. However, "Ai" is actually a pretty common name, just with a different kanji. So, I also wanted fairly common names, thus keeping with Ai's first name not standing out too much, but having significance to her character. Also one-kanji names, just to keep with a theme.
I like "echo" because because I like Hibiki as a name, and it fits with my fem!Shin's original last name, which was "kodama", another word for "echo". Shinobu is also tempting, because it fits with her/him enduring many things and is a pretty popular name. Now, Minoru I chose because of being pretty common, but also I realized while thinking that I'm not sure how Haibara and Shinichi will be relating to each other yet. My first thought was Haibara going off on his own and just keeping in touch, but...now that I think about it, keeping them close together would also be an interesting dynamic. So I wondered if maybe they would pose as relatives. Maybe not brother/sister, but maybe cousins? At the very least, with my new chapters, Haibara will be living for a while with Shinichi. Hence having related names.
Of course, this leads into a last name discussion, so I have to decide if I want to do the relatives thing, since that will save me having to come up with a last name ohoho -lazy-
