Spirits of the Heart: Chapter Four
You should have brought my laptop.
"Do you want me to take that marker away?" Kyuhyun shook his head. "Then shut up." Heechul set the bucket of ice down on the bedside tray and wheeled it over closer to the bed, careful not to knock over the stack of books or the pictures he placed there. Kyuhyun set his white board down, picking up an ice cube and popping it into his mouth. He made a face. "What? It's cold?" Kyuhyun nodded as he tried to breathe around the ice cube. "You don't say?" Heechul rested his chin in the palm of his hand, watching Kyuhyun struggle with the ice cube. Kyuhyun shot him a look as he finally got the situation under control, the cool melting of the ice soothing his raw throat.
How’s Jung Su?
"Worried about you," Heechul replied, slipping his feet out of his shoes and curling up in the chair. "He should be out of the hospital sooner rather than later though. They're really only keeping him in the hospital to make sure he doesn't tear the stitches." Kyuhyun nodded again, turning the ice cube in his mouth a little. "The others can't come today, but they said they’d all try to come visit you tomorrow." He quickly added, "Not at once though. That'd be too many people." Kyuhyun smiled a little. He imagined all of them trying to pile into the small room to visit. Although at first Kyuhyun had felt very shoehorned into the group, they were like a second family to him. It'd be something they’d unintentionally do. He couldn't say he'd necessarily mind them doing that.
Are they doing well?
Heechul nodded although honestly he couldn't say much for how the others were. After the accident, everyone seemed to withdraw from one another. Or maybe the conversations just seemed so insignificant that none of them really remembered it. Heechul was aware of when there was crying in the apartment, but he didn't remember crying once himself. He was always there comforting those that would let him the best he could. That was the way it should have been though. The younger ones should be able to cry.
An impatient tapping came from the bedside tray.
Heechul came back from his thoughts and looked to the board.
"What about me?"
Kyuhyun started to write something, hesitating. He then erased it and changed his question.
Are you coming again tomorrow?
"Not at the same time as today, probably later, but yeah."
Will you stay long?
"Aigoo, do you think I have nothing better to do all day than sit in a hospital?" Heechul made a face, crossing his arms. "I can only stay for maybe a half hour tomorrow. I have other things to do, but I will stop in some time tomorrow."
Will you bring me my laptop tomorrow then?
Heechul's brow furrowed as he held out his hand, motioning for Kyuhyun to cough up the marker. Kyuhyun quickly held the white board and marker to his chest defensively. The older of the two huffed before taking back his hand, realizing he wasn’t going to win. "I'm not bringing you anything tomorrow. Or the day after that. Or the day after that even. I didn't get any thanks for what I brought today."
Thank yo-
"If you're about to write thank you and ask for your laptop again, forget it," Heechul interrupted, picking up the remote and turning the television back on. Kyuhyun frowned, sulking a little as he put another ice chip in his mouth. He looked up at the television as Heechul flipped through the channels. He didn't really spend a lot of time talking to Heechul in the past, but surely he knew of his addiction to Starcraft. They had played together the few times they had bonded a little before. Maybe Heechul was just being like this to get a rise out of him. He'd definitely bring the laptop tomorrow. Satisfied, Kyuhyun sat back a little, focusing on the TV show Heechul seemed to be stopping on. They sat in silence for a while, just watching the television. Kyuhyun felt a little better about the silence between them than the day before. But it still bothered him. He tapped the tray with his marker again.
I named the bear. His name is Newton.
Heechul raised a brow before turning back to the television. "That's a stupid name." Frowning, Kyuhyun erased his board and set it aside. They just wouldn’t talk then. That was fine by him.
What would you name it then?
"I don't know."
Then why is Newton stupid?
"Because it is. Stop talking. I'm trying to watch," Heechul said, pointing at the TV screen. He muttered a little about how he probably missed something important because of him. Kyuhyun huffed quietly, setting aside the board again before popping yet another ice chip in his mouth. And that was how they sat together. They were only interrupted a handful of times. Sometimes Heechul got tired of the show and after checking in with Kyuhyun that it was okay to change the channel, he started surfing until he found something else to settle on. Rounds were also eventually made, the nurse making awkward small talk with the two of them as she checked Kyuhyun’s vitals. It wasn’t until Kyuhyun ordered his supper that Heechul finally uncurled himself from the chair and began to get ready to leave.
Leaving?
"Yeah, I'm hungry, too," Heechul said as he leaned down to slip his shoes back on.
You can have some of my dinner. I probably won't eat it all.
Heechul snorted. "No thank you. I had my fill of hospital food last year. You're on your own with that." Standing up, Heechul collected his bag off the ground and slung it over his shoulder. "If I come after dinner tomorrow, I'll bring you some, alright?" Heechul moved around to the foot of Kyuhyun’s bed. "But I'm not bringing your laptop." Kyuhyun sighed, nodding his head before turning his board around.
Fine…
The older man smiled, nodding in approval before patting his hand on the foot of the bed. "Try not to enjoy the sponge bath too much." Kyuhyun flushed at this, the heat rising to his cheeks and ears. He stuttered, unable to control his hand enough to write some kind of retort. It only naturally served to widen Heechul’s grin as he made his way on out of the hospital room. "Later, Kyuhyun."
Crinkling his nose a little, Kyuhyun erased what he attempted to say back to Heechul before he left. He set aside those writing materials on the bedside tray, folding his arms across his chest. It was then Kyuhyun noticed the pillow still sitting in the chair, an impression of Heechul left behind.
