she's lost in her mind again.
sitting in a tree, she's dangling her legs from a thick branch, admiring the sunshine - how the light reflects from the leaves.
but not even in the tree she is safe. a wind is roaring, and soon clouds cover the sky and lighting crashes through the landscape.
she holds onto the rough bark, feeling its texture underneath her skin, smelling the rain that will come. she presses her body strongly against a wind that she cannot stop. darkness fills the air. it is a darkness she can almost touch. it is a darkness that surrounds her completely.
soon she falls off the tree, and she breaks a bone in her leg. she hurts. the wind is becoming a storm and it rages all around her.
wet, thick drops begin falling from the sky, soaking her to the skin.
she tries to drag herself toward the tree, seeking shelter and safety.
there's noise all around her, little branches break off and fall to the ground. leaves are dancing through the air. see, she says to herself, there's beauty in this, too.
soon the storm becomes wind again, and the rain stops falling. the sun comes through the clouds in brilliant colors. there's a rainbow on the other side of the valley. she is still wet, she is still hurting, but there's light surrounding her now.
she cannot climb back on the tree, but her leg will heal and soon she'll be able to sit in its branches again.
the clouds disappear. the sky is blue and hopeful.
she rests her back against the trunk of the tree and sighs.
she can smell the freshness of the earth.
the next storm will come. but she now knows how to survive it.
