They Say Taylor Was a Good Girl...

ugh, I just found out that a former student of mine is pregnant.  I feel like I failed as a teacher.  Let's see, in 2006 she was 11 or 12 so she's now she is 16 or 17.  Also, she dyed her hair blond.

This person also failed: [from Craigslist]

Pregnancy happens. Its not a reflection upon you as a teacher. Their household and how they grew up weighs pretty heavily.

Craigslist fail.

I don't actually think it's my fault or anything but as a teacher I always hope for the very best for them. I'm obviously judging because I don't know her situation at all. Maybe this is a good thing? I don't know. I just felt like she had so much promise when she was in my 6th/7th grade class. It's still a little heartbreaking for me though even if she still is this amazing, smart, beautiful girl.

I agree with you that it is heartbreaking. I hate seeing women having kids that young. Puts them up for a lifetime of struggles and missed opportunities.

I'm sure you did your best though as an instructor. Its all we can do.

I think that's one of those things that wouldn't come up on a spellcheck but seriously, how could you apply for that job when the person can't write?

Eeeurg. I found out that a former student of mine is now paralyzed from being shot in gang-related violence. He's 22 now. I felt sick when I found out.

I share your disappointment, but rather than feeling bad about the one that "got away" you should think of all the others who benefited from your efforts and positive influence. You are a compassionate and loving person.

Thank you.

Unfortunately it's harder to find out what became of the success stories. But yes, I like to pretend I have made a real difference in at least one student's eyes.
