We had acquired a large amount of basil from the CSA choice box, and one cupful of it rooted when I stored it in a glass with water. I've no idea why--maybe because it was at a particular point in its life cycle? It rooted, I planted. Since then, I've had one other cupful root, so it seems to be random whether it will root or not. Takes about a week in water to do it. Nifty!
