Final Fantasy

Went to see Final Fantasy last night at Taylor John's in Coventry. I heard there was to be a harpist preceding Owen, and a moderately rocky local band. Thought when we got there they shifted the order around and so it all started much later that I had thought, and than was advertised.

After finding the venue, walking through industrial estates and catching a bus for a stupid length of time, we sat with some water admiring the mix of medieval and post industrial. Really that is what it was. Odd but lovely. Coventry is so maligned, there are some lovely parts. Stupid WWII.

Anyway upon settling and looking at the merchandise table, with their lovely final fantasy shoppers and honeybee EPs sealed with a wax seal, I went out for a cigarette. The rant about the really stupid smoking law is for another day. There I sat talking to another smoker who I thought was part of Owen's entourage but I wasn't sure. Anyways presently Owen came and sat down and started to feast on curry, after trying to sort out the stupid parasol that just got in the way. He then thought to introduce himself, whilst I sat there incredulously and very much tongue tied.

The harpist, baby dee was a huge revelation in terms of amazing loveliness. The lyrics were heart-rending and the harp was a lovely addition. It turned out that they had played on Antony & The Johnsons first album. The music had a similar quality. They moved onto the piano and the hurt continued, with a brief moment of comic relief. All in all a person to watch out for.

In between sets I went out for another cigarette, only to talk to the two support artists. The harpist was so engaging. I talked to a member of the other band that in the end I didn't see, but it was an unexpected surprise.

Owen was amazing as usual. His set was very different with some new projections, new songs and reworkings of old ones. He also played on the piano, peppered with mistakes for spice. There was a lady in the audience from Japan.

Then it was the trudge home, with greasy fries, and passing the motor musuem with it's very biazarre square. at night there is a light installation in the floor, that would be fabulous when tripping on LSD but less so when stone cold sober. There was a very bizarre sculpture in the air too that was actually quite nice just a bit odd.
