Pandora Hearts Retrace 55 Break/Gil Relationship

Nov 25, 2010 21:11

I actually just read the past 2 Pandora Hearts chapter, and boy was I in for a surprise.

I always wondered why Jun had shown so little of Break and Gil's relationship,
even though she had set up such a dramatic meeting for the two.

Also especially consider from Gil's point of view,
Break was actually in his life much longer than Oz or Jack.

And of course, she saved the Break/Gil relationship part for this awesome dramatic near-death Break scene + major Gil character development!

And her execution is just flawless.

The start of capture recalls the beginning of the relationship.
With Break teaching/brainwashing Gil about the nature of their relationship

Ever since the beginning, Break wanted to avoid attachment to/with Gil.
Even though at the same time, he's showing how much he care for the small boy's well being and future.
And even though some thinks Gil is dumb, I actually think Gil saw through Break's facade.
He knows that man is using him but not in a malicious way. And in Break's own way, is caring for him.

I think Gil understand that Break could have turned him into a puppet;
but instead, he's treating him as a partner/student...

And then we're back to the present. We have an interesting contrast of understanding of Break between Vincent (the norm) and Gil.

In here, we see that Gil understands Break a lot more than others.
While others just attribute all Breaks weirdness to him being the Hatter.
Gil, while not nearly as perceptive as Oz, and wasn't consciously aware that Break was blind,
but somehow he could still sense and feel that something isn't right with Break.

And once Gil realized what he had to do to go help Break.
You can see in the top right and bottom left panels that he started racing to Oz to beg for permission to go to Break.

And to set up Gil's grande rescue, Jun even show us a vulnerable Break...

But it won't really be break/gil unless there's some humor <3

And all this, I think, are set for this very page which is my favorite in the whole chapter:

I find it intriguing that Gil instead of identifying himself by his name or his chains name.
He chose to identify himself as Break's possession.

It's amazing to see Gil identifies himself as anything but Oz's servants.
Even though it's still a long way for Gil to identify himself as a "individual person", to have a sense of self and will
that's not defined by having a master - Jack or Oz or Break

Yes, Break as Gil's master
I think on a subconsciously, Gil used Break to fill his need for a master during the 10 yrs Oz is in the Absys.
And Break fully knows and anticipate that, which brings us back to the first page of the chapter - why Break had the priority talk with Gil after their first meeting.

All these are of course, wonderfully subtle, which is why Jun is an amazing mangaka.

The other thing I love about the "his left eye" comment is how it accentuates Break's vulnerability now that he's totally blind. While I'm sure Gil is oblivious to what his comment meant to Break, I hope it offers some comfort to Break that,
yes, he might be blind, but his devoted little left eye will always be there to watch out for him.

Finally, I find it funny how both Oz and Vincent were both shocked at how much Gil cares about Break.
And I love the tension that you can feel in Gil's plea. It's just typical masochist Gil to need Oz's permission to go save someone very important to him. And then to follow up with the begging and punishment... Jun just knows how to make a fangirl blush and weak lol - and Gil agrees:

gilbert, pandora's heart
