Title: Can I Buy a Vowel?
Pairings: OFC/OMC kinda starting........I guess
Rating: PG
Summary: Possible conspiracies, possible love, and possible creepy future. o.O

Raknmra wrote down the words she needed to buy when she made her daily visit to the Language Remindorium. As usual, the words began to disappear from the paper. That was alright, however, as it was special paper the Remindorium gave out that they could scan so they knew what words they could give.

Why did they buy words, one might ask. Well, what Raknmra and the others learned in history class was that a while there was languages, more than one. Strange ones like German, French, Italian, and even stranger ones like Chinese and Japanese, to name a few. But then, in 2105, the scientists noticed a strange phenomena, people were forgetting their languages.

The scientists had been quickly set to find a way to step this, but to no avail. Then, one lucky young man (who is now forgotten as many stole his idea before Kenneth Mannswell said he came up with it) that words could be put into pill form and taken so that it was remembered. Mass production was soon underway. There was one slight problem. These were Americans and spoke English. They did not have the technology, or the desire, to create pills for other languages. So now, everyone just spoke English. Or as it was now know, Earthian.

The Language Remindorium was the best, and only, place to purchase the words so desired. Business thrived as people bought words they needed and had forgotten daily.

There was a dark side, however, to these Word Pills. Take too many and you went a little crazy, as that word was said over and over for the rest or you lives. Or never being able to speak again. Raknmra saw this everyday as she worked at the PPWFW.

After she had purchased the words, she made her way to the nearest food place and sat down to eat. A strange man soon sat beside her at the counter. Raknmra felt her curiosity, which she was infamous for, peak.

“Hello,” she said. (For she had run out of “Hi.” and had not taken any yet.”

“…Hi,” he said shyly.

“Raknmra is my name.”

“I’m Josh.”

“Josh? That is unique. I have never come across those letters in such an arrangement before. I have seen some interesting names before.”

“Um…yeah, it’s not a bunch of letters strung together like your’s is. It’s a real name. From Before.”

“What are you talking about? No one has names like the Before ones. Most women stop taking the Word Pills, the doctors say they have to. It might ruin their already fragile speech skills.”

“Do you really believe that? It’s just lies spread by the government. People weren’t forgetting words. It was just the government’s way of further controlling people.”

The other patrons started to move uneasily. The owner moved to the back.

“That is silly. They would not…”

“Is it silly? You said my name. It was from the Before. Pills aren’t made with any names.”

“I…I……I do not…” Stop saying ‘I’, she thought. You will run out for today. You can not take more than the daily dose. But, said a small voice, he said it is just government control. If he is telling the truth, than surely you should be able to say whatever you want to say. But…! You never know, the other voice butted in. Give it a try! “I…Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sure. Where I live, none of us have taken the Pills.”

“You have never taken the Word Pills!” she said in shock.

“Nope. Never have.”

See, the other voice said triumphantly, he is right.

“Can…can people who have taken Word Pills…learn to not depend on them?”

“Yes, my grandparents did.”

“How…?”

Raknmra was cut off by the PPWFW Control Crew that burst into the food place. Two leaped at Josh and cuffed him.

He said nothing as he was dragged out of the place. He just stared into Raknmra’s eyes. Daring her to try. Daring her to forget.

One of the PPWFW Control Crew had recognized her and came over to her. “Thanks for stalling him. He’s been a tough one to catch.”

“Sir, what if he is right? What if…”

“Don’t tell me you believe what he’s saying?

“Well, there is a chance that he was telling the truth.”

“Highly unlikely. The government wouldn’t lie like that.”

“He said he had never taken Word Pills.”

“Aye, some say that. He probably overdosed on them. You see it all the time.”

“Not like that.”

“You know it’s not the same for everybody. That must be how it affects him."

“Are you sure? You did not even test him.”
“Forget what he said. Stop asking questions. He lied.” He then walked back to his crew and went out the door.
Raknmra stood there. She was lost and had no way to find the truth.
