No one at Neptune High School trusted their eyes when they saw Veronica and Logan walking down the hall together the Monday after their first official date. The problem? They were holding hands. Even more perplexing, when the two of them parted ways for class, he planted a kiss on the crown of her head.
By the time second period rolled around, theories were being passed through the student body like counterfeit bills, each one worthless but designed in such a way that listeners simply accepted their suggested value.
Dick Casablancas thought it was a joke.
Shelly Pomeroy thought Logan had been hit on the head. Hard.
Madison Sinclair figured there was some sort of bribery involved.
John Enbom supposed it was Logan’s way of getting out of a speeding ticket or some other minor infraction.
Only the Kane siblings acknowledged that what they were seeing was real. They’d both been informed beforehand of the impending change in Logan and Veronica’s status as ‘just friends’. Neither of them was very happy about it though.
Lilly regarded the pair with hints of amusement when they approached her at different times throughout that first day. She told them how cute they looked together, and asked Logan what took him so long to unearth a gem like Veronica. These tasks weren’t particularly distressing to the social queen since she didn’t expect them to last long. When it came to waiting for sex, he had the patience of a Jack Russell Terrier. The girls he hooked up with during their periods of hiatus were nothing but a balm for an itch he couldn’t stop scratching. There was no way he’d be able to wait more than a couple of weeks for Veronica to hand over the key to her chastity belt.
Hence, their break-up was not only inevitable, but also imminent. The starting gun of their relationship had gone off at sunset, their day together nearing its end in the same instant it began.
Her vocal cords never actually shaped this opinion into words, but Lilly found other subtle ways to liberate it. Through comments whose structure was benign, but underlying physiology was far more malignant. For example, the question she asked after their fourth date. “No problem getting in before curfew, huh Logan?” Meant to embarrass Veronica and provoke the soon-to-be-frustrated, penis-shaped part of Logan.
It appeared that perhaps Lilly wasn’t quite as over Logan as she’d proclaimed during her and Veronica’s chat in the bathroom. Every so often, she caught the heiress looking at him with the barest hint of possessiveness. Like she didn’t mind the way Veronica was touching her ex-boyfriend, only because she knew he’d be hers again soon. Right after this little ‘phase’ of his was over.
Duncan’s reaction, meanwhile, wasn’t quite as pleasant. His sister might have been patronizing them a little, might have been trying to not-so-subtly scuttle back onto Logan’s radar, but at least she was smiling.
As expected, when Logan had phoned his best friend the previous week to tell him about his plans for that Saturday, the billionaire’s son had been… less than enthused. There was a long moment where he didn’t say anything. He then asked for clarification several times, wanting to make absolutely sure that Logan was talking about Veronica Mars… His Veronica Mars.
Their conversation ended with both boys almost yelling at each other. Logan insisted that although he’d committed a bit of a dick move, he hadn’t broken any major regulations in the bro code. Duncan refused to listen though, instead telling him over and over that he just had no right, and Logan snapped his phone shut when the words ‘selfish jerk’ passed through the other boy’s lips. Duncan didn’t bother calling back.
After that, Logan sat silently for a long while, wondering if in gaining a girlfriend, he’d simultaneously lost his best friend.
He didn’t think he’d be ecstatic to hear the news, but he also didn’t expect such naked anger. Or the unwavering insistence that Logan was stepping onto territory that did not, and never would belong to him.
So, given the world of skepticism and resentment they were shoved into, the first couple weeks of their relationship were a little difficult. Lilly was her usual self around Veronica, but there was a tension between them. Invisible and not too powerful… but still there. Duncan refused to come within a five-foot radius of the pair whenever he could help it. Rarely did he mutter more than a half-pleasant ‘hello’ to them over the course of a day.
Besides the Kane boycott- or perhaps because of it -the rest of the 09er crowd wasn’t shy about showing their disapproval. Though people still sat with them at lunch, Logan and Veronica were treated either as if they were both absent, or as if they weren’t really a couple. Logan’s friends didn’t include her in a conversation unless he found a way to force them into it. The female half of the 09er clan managed to pay even less attention to Veronica than they usually did. Punishment for daring to claim one of the most eligible bachelors in their clique without first requesting permission to do so.
After a while though, the icy barrier separating Logan and Veronica from their peers began to thaw. When making plans for the weekend, instead of suggesting that Logan should join them, they began to say ‘you guys’. Veronica was allowed to tag along on their surfing expeditions, even if she spent most of their outings sitting on the beach either reading or catching up on homework. Shelley, Caitlin, and their other feline friends eventually found new posts to scratch at, and returned to a state of treating their blonde rival with indifference.
Even Lilly and Duncan changed their attitudes.
After about a month, Lilly realized that there was nothing funny about the relationship between her ex-boyfriend and her best friend. She watched as they became more comfortable with each other. Saw the way Logan looked at Veronica, and remembered when he’d trained a similar gaze on her. The one that said she was the center of his universe; that the apocalypse could come tomorrow and as long as he had her, he would be okay.
The day Lilly approached them and suggested a double date, Veronica knew they were back to being best friends, rather than just saying so. That awful, taut rubber band between them was finally cut.
Duncan’s transition was slower, but eventually the damage done to his and Logan’s friendship was repaired. With his mind no longer fixated on Veronica, he began to notice other girls around him. He went on a few dates with some minor success. Then, one day during gym class, he walked up to Logan and asked what he thought about Meg Manning. Startled at first, Logan could do nothing but gawk at his previously-best-but-now-just-semi-good friend. A few unspoken words were passed between them, and he realized the significance of the question. At that point he just smiled, gave Duncan a shoulder-to-shoulder bump, and served up his opinion on the blonde good-girl.
After that the Fabulous Four fell back into a rhythm. Of course, the organization of their group had changed so it wasn’t quite the same as before. Didn’t take long for them to being enjoying it though. Perhaps even more than they did their old tune.
It was a lot like renovating a home. The process was often slow and painful, but once the sawdust settled and the final coat of paint was applied, everyone involved could step back and sigh with both relief and pleasure that the job was over. They could then move all of their furniture back in, and get back on with their lives together.
)) End ((
[ Okay, now Logan and Veronica’s journey is officially over! Once again, I really hope that you’ve enjoyed this story. I certainly had a lot of fun writing it. And, as I said at the end of Chapter Eight, this isn’t the last you’ll see of Stay-cation Logan and Veronica ;) …Thanks again everyone! ]
