Patriotic Hypocricy
I posted this as a response to a video that a young man I respect, but often disagree with, posted on a bulletin.
I'm posting it again because I've seen alot of similar thoughts from some of my friends, family and co-workers.
Some people I am friends with are even becoming increasingly obvious in their racist tyraids and I'm not too happy about it.
I rarely say anything about "racism" because its such a vague and useless term, but when its obvious, it is sickening.
I believe in the hope of an united America, but folks are mistaken when they say that America was founded on the similarities of its earliest colonists. It was founded on people wanting to express their differences, how they wanted, fleeing oppression.
The revolution took place because we were being forced to fall in line with England.
Forcing everyone here to speak the same language, abandon their heritage and assimilate into one individual identity that would qualify as "American" goes against everything this nation was founded on. There is no blueprint for an American. It's not about your skin color, the language you speak, or even your sense of patriotism. It's about the dream of freedom and the right to pursue happiness. Come as you are.
"Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
That's the promise of America. Not, "speak English, or get out!"
There are some out there who may believe they fit the perfect image of a white bleeding heart patriot, but as defined Americans, they are hypocrites.
I'm all in favor of having the spirit of revolution in your minds, but make sure you have it for the right reasons.
Open up your hearts for crying out loud.
