I've been tempted to download Watershed but then realized it's Opeth. Do they do anything interesting this time around or do they still recycle the "death metal mixed with quiet parts" idea? They don't make bad music, in fact, it's pretty good, I just don't see why so many people wank over them (not saying you do, just saying others who swear by them). And I haven't listened to the last 2 Mars Volta albums. They make a lot of music, those hyperactive bastards.
Let me try to see if I can remember what I've heard this year... and this isn't in order.
Weezer - The Red Album
Kayo Dot - Blue Lambency Downward
Thrice - The Alchemy Index Vols. III & IV
Protest the Hero - Fortress
Genghis Tron - Board Up The House
Atmosphere - When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold
I'm calling it RIGHT NOW: #1 with nothing else even being close, Slipknot's new album.
Some other albums I'm looking forward to and think they'll rate highly:
From The Skies Awaken - A Black Rose For Your Behaviour (it's a band that a friend is in, back in ol' Nova Scotia).
Propagandhi - Whatever their new album is called...
I was disappointed by the new Panic At The Disco album. I actually liked their first a lot and thought they were much more than people give 'em credit for. Their new album has a few good songs but it's just not as good as their first. Also by The Matches.
This is gonna be a good year for music... Slipknot, Propagandhi, Saosin (I think), Rise Against, Amen etc
I'll chime in with some more as I remember/hear! I`m downloading the Stephen Malkmus album cuz of you. These lists are always fun.
The Malkmus one took me a couple of times to really fall in love with it. I'm not a huge Pavement fan though, so I was kinda surprised.
The Opeth album is good, but like you said, alot of loud/quiet in parts but with more piano and organ work than usual! Actually, you might like it better than some of their other stuff... They do have a new guitarist.
Overall, the first six months of the year have been decent, but nothing's really exploded off the charts for me yet. The Weezer album was disappointing, but I did like Pork and Beans.
Also, I hadn't heard about the new Slipknot! I'll definitely get it because you turned me on to Volume 3, which I liked.
