I was thinking today about the word "lunch," for perhaps a longer time than is healthy. Such a fantastic word, and yet at the same time rather aesthetically misshapen. And it's a much funnier word in general than, say, "dinner" or "supper" (the next best word, certainly) or "breakfast." Maybe part of the appeal to me is that it conjures up the idea of using it as a verb, not in its normal form, but as a sort of middle ground between "lurch" and "lunge." (For example: "The brave yet dull-witted Elmont lunched forward with his broadsword, but the villainous Sir Morton was too quick for him.") Interestingly, the word "lunchtime" holds no such appeal in my eyes; it may be too reminiscent of "crunch time," a phrase which should be stricken from the English language at the next available moment.
In other news, I finally finished reading Gravity's Rainbow a few days ago, which, uh, wow. It did take me about half a year to read, mostly because I couldn't quite get myself to read it while school was going on. I think I'll wait a bit before trying to read his new 1100-page novel.
Just watched Tarkovsky's The Mirror tonight, which was really lovely.
Here, look.
On a more lowbrow note, I'm getting way too much enjoyment out of MTV's "Next." I wish I could sum up my every action with hilarious rhyming couplets.
