Went again today and had a few more random thoughts
Beorn’s backstory strikes me as a mix of Beren’s and Tuor’s. I don’t myself think Beorn is a Beren remix / descendent, but perhaps the movie writers do?
What is going on with Thranduil’s weird face change when he was talking about dragons? Is he really horribly scarred and hides it through some sort of glamour, or was the change of face an illusion caused by his mental agitation?
There is a definite theme of individual loyalty vs wider good and I like that it doesn’t come down on one side or the other, but rather suggests it depends on individual circumstances.
I really like what is being done with both Thranduil and Thorin, but it's also making me go 'Dammit PJ why didn't you do that with Denethor? WHY?'
