Trying my hand at cloth pads!

Hey everybody,

In an unusual burst of creativity, I have decided to try to make my own cloth pad!  A very generous friend sent me some scrap material to practice on, and I am wondering what folks recommend I put together from the assortment that I have.  I never use anything heavier than a regular absorbency and I like relatively thin pads.  Here are the materials at my disposal:

-flannel or cotton for top layer (I'm opting for flannel)
-polyester fleece for bottom layer (...right??)
-PUL
-batting for quilts (not ideal, I have heard)
-birds eye cotton (which I believe is what they use in PIMPS)

Here are my specific questions:

1) Do you I need the layer of PUL?  I prefer not to have PUL, but I'm not sure if this type of fleece is water resistant or if my options for core are absorbent enough to skip the PUL.
2) How many layers of the birds eye cotton do I need?  I usually wear a medium PIMP.
3) If I use the birds eye cotton, is the batting necessary as well?  If so, how many layers?

Thanks everyone for advice!  I don't have a ton of fabric to mess with, so I'm going to try and get it right the first time.  My friend will be able to help me once I have more specific questions in regards to sewing itself, I just thought I'd run this by you all so as not to be wasteful of materials.  Thanks in advance for any tips, I hope I'm not asking sellers to give away too much information :)
