I don't know how to LJ cut before anyone tells me this is too long.

Anyway, Iike I said; This is going to be long because I have some things to get off my chest. So, after years of jumping from community to community, I find myself joining yet another one. Ironically, I had sworn to never join an online community again. I'm talking more about the ( Read more... )

I'm not sure what city you're in, or what part of the world you're in, since I can't access your journal or profile page, but I've known several 'goths' in the Los Angeles area who (1) are not caucasian; (2) don't dress in 'standard' goth clothing all the time; (3) occasionally wear pink, purple, green, yellow or white without issue; (4) love Tim Burton films; (5) despise shopping at Hop Topic; (6) love true crime novels, serial killers, crime noir films, and anything having to do with true crime; and (7) have differing levels of appreciation for all kinds of goth music.

Sure, there are plenty of people in the goth scene here who are, as you described, dressing to be seen, will only listen to Sisters of Mercy, the Cure, Depeche Mode and EBM bands (a particular genre of goth music that I can't stand). But there are others in LA who like 'romanti-goth' music (old 4AD bands, etc), T-Rex, the Cramps, death rock (45 Grave, the Damned, Alien Sex Fiend, Christian Death), shoegaze (Slowdive, Jesus&Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, etc), Nick Cave, Bauhaus, Dee-lite, Stereolab, Ladytron, the Pixies, Martin Denny, ELO... the list goes on. There isn't just one way to 'be a goth,' and there are many people in my city who realize that.

I made a choice a few years back to stop frequenting the goth clubs where people with the former list of characteristics like to hang out. Every once in a while, if I feel like going all out in my PVC, petticoats, boots and corset, I'll frequent one of those goth clubs. But I've made it a point to check out other clubs, try and meet different people and not limit myself to one 'scene' just because I have an interest in darker things that some people might interpret as 'goth.' I'm not a 'goth,' really, as people seem to want to define it today. I'm just a person with some darker aspects of my personality, and a healthy interest in art and pop cultural phenomena that are a little outside the norm.

A shame that the first poster in such a long time will never see that reply having deleted their account already :(
