I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but I've been reading Robin Hobb's books and I really enjoy them. Her first trilogy, the Farseer trilogy (Assassin's Apprentice, Royal Assassin, and Assassin's Quest) were quite good, though not the best. I really, REALLY enjoyed her more maritime second trilogy, The Liveship Traders (Ship of Magic, Mad Ship, and Ship of Destiny), and I've just started the second book in her final trilogy set in this world, The Tawny Man (Fool's Errand, The Golden Fool, and Fool's Fate). So far, I still like the second trilogy the best, though my favorite character--who is in every book in all 3 sets--is having much more of his past revealed. (One of my other favorite characters didn't make it through the end of the first book, however, so I was very sad about that.)
Anyway, just wanted to recommend her work. She also writes under the name Megan Lindholm. And for what it's worth, George R. R. Martin is very fond of her work as well, so there is perhaps a more weighty recommendation than mine :)
