Joe married his first wife, Neilia Hunter Biden in 1966. She was killed in a car crash in 1972 that also took the life of the couple’s baby Naomi Biden. Their sons Beau and Robert Hunter were also in the car and suffered serious injuries. The accident occurred one month before Biden, 30, was to take the oath of office for his first Senate term. He was sworn in at the hospital bedside of his children, who both fully recovered from their injuries.
