FennecPT: the Fennec Profile Tool

Feb 10, 2011 18:06

Unlike the desktop version, there is no easy way to use more than one profile in the mobile version of Firefox ("Fennec"). This hampers testing, when you often want to switch back and forth between profiles, in order to test the effects of various profile settings, maintain a collection of different profiles, or basically do any testing that involves profiles at all.

Thus the Mozilla A-Team brings you a new tool: FennecPT. FennecPT keeps profiles on a local machine and transfers them back and forth to a mobile device as required. You can tag profiles when you download them from the device to keep them organized.

You'll need the SUTAgent in order to use FennecPT. WARNING: the SUTAgent opens a big, fat hole in your phone's security in order to grant (relatively) low-level access to the device. Thus FennecPT, and the SUTAgent in general, should only be used in controlled environments. FennecPT IS NOT a general-use profile manager like jgriffin's great Firefox Profile Manager. Rather, FennecPT is targeted towards developers and testers. Neither Mozilla nor I are liable for destroyed phones, your personal life being revealed on the Internet, etc., etc.

So if you're still reading, I'll assume you know what you're doing. Here are a couple screenshots to get you started:

The open-device dialog. You can save device profiles to easily load them again in the future.

The main UI. Here we see the list of locally saved profiles and the connection status. Activity messages are displayed in the lower right (e.g. "Downloading profile..."). The profile with the long name is an automatically generated name that's used if FennecPT hasn't been run with the device before (or if Fennec was reinstalled, generating a new profile). I've tagged the other two profiles after bookmarks, which I used to verify that the correct profile was uploaded.

There are two actions you can perform: downloading a profile and launching Fennec with the chosen profile. When you launch Fennec, you'll also be given the opportunity to download the current profile, since it will be replaced by the new profile. You can choose to overwrite profiles that already exist locally, or you can tag them with a new name. So you can make various changes, save profile copies, and then later launch Fennec and swap in your desired configuration. The README, also found in the source and binary packages has a longer, more detailed example of usage.

Go to the FennecPT home page for download links and to file bugs.

For those who might be wondering, the initial release was called FennecPM, the Fennec Profile Manager. However it was pointed out that the tool has a narrower focus and a different intended audience than the full-fledged Firefox Profile Manager, so to emphasize this, the name was changed from "Manager" to "Tool". This release also has a few improvements over the last FennecPM release.
