What a colourful set of drabbles. (Yeah - the old jokes are not always the best, but...)

I really like the idea of Melinna helping to make Imladris a more colourful place.

Eh, colour is the point of this, after all. ;) And thank you! I'm very glad you liked this set. And now I must get back to the dragon story that is totally the work of my Frivolous Twin and nothing to do with me whatsoever. :'D

You did such a good job on these. And here I thought I'd stumped you. ;-) I particularly like the one with "broom", Melina explaining away and Erestor asleep. So typical.

You almost did! It took me a while to think my way round that. :D And thank you, I'm so glad you liked these. It was fun to dig up some of my old notes on ancient dyeing techniques.

I will now return to Bree and the Barrowdowns. Honest!

And it's interesting to read. I hadn't given much thought to how people used to dye fabric. I knew about indigo but that's about it. So in addition to being entertained I learned something too. :-)

Oh wonderful! It's very much one of my hobbies, so naturally I was a little worried about being self-indulgent; but then I went ahead and posted anyway because really, what the hell. :'D ( ... )

These are delightful. I especially liked the Isatis Tinctoria- Bees, one. The idea of a "dye-garden" is so very female, in the best sense of the word.
Do you use plant dyes yourself?

Yes, I do -- although I cheat and buy mine from the internet. But there's a stately home near me (well, me at the other end of the country) that has a dye garden...

It's wonderful to hear that you liked these. Thank you, as ever!

Wow! I surely loved these! From the scientific names to the sharp strokes in each scene... My favourite is the genista, maybe beacuse I so miss srping and the brilliant yellow against the sun, and the vignette so reminded me of summer days!! But Indigo was wonderful, too, and what about verdigris... Colour-makers are absolute magicians in my book. Wonderful!

That's lovely to hear! :D Natural dyeing's been one of my hobbies since I took a module on ancient textiles a couple of years ago, so I wasn't sure whether I was info-dumping a bit in these drabbles; but then I thought 'what the hell' and did it anyway...

I'm so glad you liked them! Thank you for taking the time to read them and let me know (and I hope RL is kinder to you in future). *hugs*

Then you might like to check the Gondolin tag on my journal...for job reasons I travel quite often to cuzco, In Peru, and some of my work there involves traditonal weavers... That's why a call them "colour-makers..." I find that art truly fascinating!

Beautiful! I liked this excursion into ancient dyeing techniques. Some I recognized, once having researched ways of creating colors for painting and the dyeing of clothes during the middle ages for a story. I wonder how Erestor can stay so quiet. Melinna and Celebrían giggling, playing with dyes... If I were Erestor and Elrond, I'd have a sense of foreboding, like The Color Of Doom... I'd not be surprised if Elrond will wake up next chapter with his hair dyed in a pansy-bright violet!

*g* Thank you! That's particularly good to hear because I was being a bit self-indulgent with this set and warbling about one of my own hobbies.

If I were Erestor and Elrond, I'd have a sense of foreboding, like The Color Of Doom... I'd not be surprised if Elrond will wake up next chapter with his hair dyed in a pansy-bright violet!

Forebodings, definitely; I don't know if alkanet would make a good hairdye, but I have vivid memories of setting fire to the kitchen the summer before last in an attempt to see what colour I'd get out of an alkanet bath of surgical spirits...
