faecat has mentioned a few times that her library has an option to get e-books to download onto your PDA. And I'd been bemoaning the fact that my library doesn't have this and wah, etc.
No more.
My library now not only has downloadable e-books, but also audio books that I can download in my underwear in my office chair. (Or fully clothed from work, too, I mean).
I enter my library card number, register for a free account, and then download a file (either CD or lower quality) that I can put on my iPod, play in Winamp, etc. After three weeks, I have the option to renew the file once or let it expire and then delete it -- no late fees, it just doesn't play anymore.
And the catalog seems to already be decently extensive with 1,400 audiobooks.
Can we say wow, people? Seriously, I love the act of going to the library and holding books in my hands, but I've been (a) doing poorly with remembering to renew and (b) finding that I'm often too tired to actually read a book when I get home. So I've been working on audiobooks, especially during my commute to work, but my selection was limited. But now -- now a whole new world of audiobook laziness is open to me.
I love you, Nashville Public Library. First you let me renew ALL of my books online with the click of a button, then you let me search and reserve books from home with little fanfare and grab them directly from the special reserve shelf without having to wait in line to ask someone to get them for me, then you put in the "U-Scan express lane" so that I can have my reserve books in my greedy little hands in record time without waiting for the woman with four kids to pay her DVD late fees.
And now. Now this.
Ohhh. *hugs her library* :)
