When I start reminiscing about high school cafeteria food, I guess it's a good sign that I'm hungry, bored, or both (right now it's a little of both).
Poll Lunchlady Land!
I had pretty good cafeteria food - my absolute favorite was steak strip day. We had these peppery breaded steak strips with packets of barbecue sauce, whipped potatoes (not mashed, but whipped -- they were kind of soupy, but very salty, so I loved them), green beans or peas, a yeast roll, and sometimes we had mac-n-cheese, too. Oh, and some boring dessert thing, but the important part was the triumvirate of the steak strips, potatoes, and roll. You could tear the strips into small chunks, then put them on the roll, then dunk that in the potatoes and barbecue sauce. :) Starch, salt, fried, fat -- all the essential elements of yum. All it needed was some cheese.
The only downside of steak strip day was that it was the day that everyone ate in the hot-food line cafeteria, (as opposed to the sandwich/salad line and the burger/pizza line), so if you weren't near the front of the line, you might have to wolf down your steak strippy goodness in the last five minutes of lunch.
I'm gonna see if I can find some steak strips for dinner. Man those were good.
