Slang that we (as Americans) need to 'borrow' from Tassie:
"Bogans"- basically, rednecks, but with an emphasis on the inbreed part. A lot of people from Victoria seem to be refered to as Bogans, but I don't know my geography well enough to comment fully on why that matters.
"No Worries"- Everyone, all the time, says this to everything, and what's really impressive is that they're laid back enough to mean it! ie "Oops! I spilled my curried chicken on your jumper!" "No Worries!" *smile at each other and go on with their days*
"Ta"- which I think is British as well, but it's WAY better than, "hey [man]"
Anyhow, I will have to keep updating, because they have tons of wonderful ways of putting things.
Also, the Aussies abbriviate EVERYTHING:
Breakfast= Brekkie
Afternoon=Arvo
So far, the trip is peaceful and slow. It's the first time I've been overseas that I didn't have to overcome jetlag immediately to start doing the real traveling! I have the same room for the month I'm here, in the 'college' (dorm) that Katy lives in. They're all singles, and big by normal bedroom standards, so ungodly massive compared to singles in US dorms! Also, the bathrooms are clean and the showers are nicer than any I've seen in a hotel! Big, soft showerheads and teak floor slat things to keep your feet off the tile. Out my window there's a euchalyptus grove with strange birds, oppossums (which look like huge, black, longhaired cats that you just want to cuddle, until they make that god-awful screech!), and 'bouncies' (pademelons and wallabies). Apparently, the first Westerners to land here thought they'd found a new dimension: the mammals hop, the trees lose their bark in winter and keep their leaves, the seasons are all backwards, etc. It is quite strange, but even moreso because a lot of things seem normal, and then they're not quite right!
I keep saying that they have 'real food' everywhere, by which I mean the chicken obviously was once part of a chicken, the cream obviously came out of a cow, and the veggies are all incredably fresh! Even the Tim Tams seem like someone paid attention to their creation, unlike our pathetic Oreos!
Tomorrow we will set up a car trip to the East coast, and maybe all the way North to Cradle Mountain. We'll take the following long weekend to fly to Melbourne and sightsee. But, mostly it's hanging around in Hobart.
Anticdote of the trip:
The guy sitting next to me on my longest of the 4 flights (16 hrs) owns a home in LA and another N of Syndey, and he had this to say of Hobart. "If I had 6 months left to live, I'd move immediately to Hobart. Know why? Six months in Hobart would take ages to pass! There is NOTHING in Hobart! No one goes there! Fly up to Melbourne and tell your sister to ditch class and be part of a culture again!"
Hahahahaha
