Well, had a pretty mediocre New Years, as always. I have never had a good one. I keep trying to make it a resolution for the next year that I will attend a good party and be surrounded by friends and have immense fun, but it's really cemented itself as The Holiday That Never Works Out(tm).
Three more days until I'm back in Hobart. Yaaaaay.
My reading binge continues, with Blaze of Glory by Michael Pryor. Taking a while to get into it; it's a bit slower than the other fantasy novels I've been reading. It's one of those books that you sense is teetering on the edge of action constantly...then keeps pulling away. It's another one of the recent 'teenage wizard' books that have come out since Potter, but differentiates itself by being far more laid back.
Phillip Reeve's Mortal Engines has been the best read of the bunch I got, but boy, does he love depressing endings. There's a lot of Phillip Pullman in his writing; a lot of disparate fantasy/sci-fi elements with an overriding sort of spirituality connected to life cycles and death and whatnot. Actually, The Amulet of Samarkand had a little Pullman in it, too. Maybe he's the Tolkein of the new millenium; the work that other artists draw on for inspiration.
May be visiting Melbourne city one last time; not sure.
