I took apart a chunk of my house.

It started, innocently enough, with a discussion about how the carpet (which had been there since the 90s) was attached to the stairs. That led, as it naturally does (work with me here) to tearing all the carpet OFF the stairs.

It was filthy underneath.

After pulling up the carpet and pulling out the bazillion staples and tack strips holding it down, I turned to the next logical step: taking apart the bannister, ostensibly to facilitate refinishing it’s many parts.

Now there’s no bannister.

Next step is to buy paint/varnish stripper and clean all the wood pieces up, putty all the holes, and apply a new finish. I’ll probably paint the spindles again, but I’d like the rails and posts to be stained dark like the original finish. I’d like to sand and refinish the stairs while we’re at it, too. Not sure about the logistics of doing that. Clay says he’d rather put a new carpet down, but I’d hate to do all that work and just cover it up.

Further updates as events warrant. Hopefully no one falls off the stairs!
