Summary: Rodney's friends shed some light on his relationship with Lorne
Author's Notes: small spoilers for No Man's Land, but not really because you see it in Allies
Rodney doesn’t talk about his first date with Lorne much.
Just says he had a nice time and Lorne just shrugs and goes back to doing whatever it is that he was doing before he was interrupted.
All of Atlantis has come up with stories of their own, ranging from outrageously romantic to a little bit masochistic. Though everyone can agree that they all want him to give Lorne a PET scan.
Carson’s thought about it. Mainly because he remembers how loudly they bickered with each other after that first mission to retrieve Aiden. How Rodney had actually growled at the Major and how the Major rolled his eyes in Rodney direction and told him to keep his over inflated ego in check.
They both had perceived notions of each other, Carson can guess that much, but he has to wonder some times how they got over those notions. How they came to realize they actually were more alike then the thought.
How they actually made it work and continue to make it work.
Carson guesses he could ask, but he’s not too sure he wants too. There’s something about the mystery, something about the way the blend together so well that it just doesn’t need to be spoken.
Carson thinks more things should be like that.

John’s not stupid.
He sees it. Everybody sees it, but nobody asks and that’s just fine with John. Lorne’s a good soldier and he’d hate to lose the guy because of some stupid military mindset that says he can’t have a relationship with John’s best friend who just happens to be a guy.
Not to say that they aren’t good at hiding it, because they are. In fact John’s amazed at Rodney’s ability to keep it all in the way he does. But John’s never thought of Rodney as the kind of guy to go in for the public displays of affections so it actually makes a weird kind of sense.
He remembers that first mission because everyone does. Remembers the shouting matches that came after that and he has to wonder why Lorne would subject himself to it everyday.
If he’d have known it was some weird kind of foreplay, he would have had Carson check out Lorne sooner than he did.
But Rodney’s been happier, eating more and complaining less. And when John stops by the lab in the early hours of the morning because he can’t sleep, Rodney isn’t there anymore.
He’s still dedicated. John thinks if he had to Rodney would pull an all nighter. But he doesn’t have to, at least not every night and if that’s because he’s engaging in slightly illegal activities with John’s Second in Command, who is John to come in the way of that.
It’s not like he’s paid much attention to the rules in his life.

Radek thinks they’re sneaky.
Sneakier than he would have ever given Rodney credit for being under normal circumstances, but they are definitely sneaky.
You couldn’t see it if you weren’t looking and he has to kick himself for barely noticing it as well.
It’s after the enzyme fiasco because that’s when it’s the most obvious. The touching concern in the Major’s eyes as he hangs on Carson’s words for reassurance. The way he stays close to Rodney after Rodney demands to be part of the team that goes to the Hive ship despite barely being cleared medically.
They’re careful not to stand too close. Careful not to be too obvious because Colonel Caldwell is right there and he would know if he took the chance to look closely enough. And Radek admires how solid they are despite the secrecy.
Many people will say that Rodney doesn’t deserve it and Radek will agree with them on occasion because Rodney gets under his skin like nobody else, but Rodney needs love to.
And if the Major is the one that wants to give it, then Radek wishes him the best.

Teyla feels like she’s known the longest.
Not because she has any special insight to Rodney McKay. She barely understands him half the time, but she thinks that’s okay. The relationship is one based on being a team and she doesn’t have to understand him to respect him.
He’s a complicated man, this is true. More complicated then John she thinks because John hides almost all of himself and Rodney… Rodney puts himself out there for scrutiny and cares, but doesn't care all at the same time.
It’s the little things that she’s picked up. The shift in his attitude. The way he doesn’t call John away from their sparing matches quite as much as he used to. The way he’ll make excuses for Major Lorne to eat with them, whether it be arguments carried over or discussions on the best uses for naquadah.
Major Lorne keeps up with him and that’s a feat that Teyla doesn’t take lightly. Very few could keep up with a man like Rodney McKay, but Major Lorne always gives as good as he gets.
She doesn’t need solid evidence and that’s a good thing because they don’t give it freely. The hide and Teyla knows that has something to do with their ways, but also… she thinks they enjoy the privacy.
But when Major Lorne’s team got in the middle of Dr. Weir and John when they were under the effects of alien possession, it was Major Lorne that Rodney insisted Carson check out when things got back up and running.
The Major had looked embarrassed and had claimed it was only a bump, but Rodney insisted and Teyla remembers sharing a smile with Ronon over the whole thing.
She also remembers that Rodney never took his hand off of Major Lorne’s.

Elizabeth’s heard the rumors.
She’s always felt that if Rodney wanted her to know for sure then he would tell her. She’s not about to listen to a bunch of conjecture without the facts. There were rumors going around about John and Rodney not too long ago and Elizabeth knows those aren’t true.
She’s seen the way John acts with Carson to know that much.
He and Rodney are just good friends and she guesses she could probably find out from him what the real deal is, but she thinks she can give Rodney this privacy if he really wants it.
Besides she’s not sure it’s true anyway.
At least… not until the incident with the Genii and Elizabeth almost convinced herself then that there wasn’t anything going on. Because Lorne was dead, they brought back the dog tags and the bodies and Rodney just kept right on going. Looking for any reason to trade with the Laden for the ZPM and Elizabeth doesn’t think that that’s the act of a man that just lost someone he cares for.
But, after John has marched off to assemble strike teams and MALPs and Ronon and Teyla are doing their interrogating thing, Elizabeth finds him in the meeting room, sitting at looking lost as he fondles dog tags.
Lorne’s dog tags and Elizabeth doesn’t need to see them to know that they’re Lorne’s. She saw the movement between John and him and now she gets it. Gets that Rodney’s grieving in his own way and Elizabeth has no right to make judgements on that.
And when he spots her, eyes impossibly wide and bright with what looks like unshed tears, he straightens up, chin thrust out and his lips are pursed. He doesn’t say anything and he doesn’t need too.
Elizabeth gets it all the same.

Ronon doesn’t always understand the people of Atlantis.
They’re traditions are so different from his own and they’re all about secrets and hiding and Ronon sometimes doesn’t even want to think about it for too long.
It gives him a headache.
He certainly doesn’t get McKay. Knows that the guy saves their asses more times then they can count, but he’s not a soldier and it took him awhile to understand why Sheppard would even considering bringing him off-world for missions.
He’s smart, smarter than anyone Ronon’s ever known and he’s inventive. Comes up with the answer seconds before certain death and for all his complaining and bitching, he makes it look easy.
Ronon thinks he’s a different kind of soldier, certainly still gathering his bearings, but he holds his own most of the time and if Ronon has to protect him, then that’s just how it has to be some times.
He’s not sure how Lorne fits into the equation. He’s met the guy a few times, sparred with him and he knows that Lorne can hold his own. Lorne is a soldier and he likes McKay, a lot more than most people, and Ronon can see that.
He knows they have to hide because of their traditions, at least Lorne’s and Ronon can respect that. He’s surprised that McKay doesn’t complain about it more though.
He’s perfectly fine with his understanding of things, but then he gets stuck on a Hive ship in a cocoon next to a lamenting McKay and that understanding shifts a little bit.
“I just… there were things… things I wanted to do with my life that I never… I mean I thought I’d just have more time which is stupid considering what we do.”
McKay takes a deep breath and shudders.
“There’s one really big thing I wanted to do and now I’m going to die and he… I never…”
His voice borders on hysterical and Ronon shifts around in his cocoon. He’s almost out and he needs McKay thinking clearly. Not thinking about all the things he wanted to do before he died.
“I can’t believe I never told him.” McKay says.
He gets quiet for a few moments and Ronon shifts more, thinks he’s almost got it, but he’s not so sure McKay’s going to be okay if they get out. Ronon figures a loud talkative McKay is better then one that’s all maudlin and thinking about how he never got to tell Lorne that he loved him.
“He knows.” Ronon grunts.
“What… how… how can you be so sure?”
It’s the uncertainty in his voice that makes Ronon stop struggling for a few seconds because how could McKay not know that Lorne loves him and that Lorne knows that he loves him back. It’s obvious to anyone with eyes.
“Because he loves you too.”
He gets quiet again and Ronon can tell he’s thinking. Thinking about that and not about how they’re going to get out of his mess and Ronon needs McKay thinking about that because there’s not doubt that McKay’s brain is going to get them out of this one.
“You can tell him that when we get out of here.” Ronon says.
“Oh right, like we’re ever going to get out of here. The chances of that are…”
Ronon listens to him and finds he actually finds it comforting.
He guesses that’s how Major Lorne must feel.
