Sham-Wow!

Here are a few snaps I took of Dopplereffekt not performing in New York last night @ Le Poisson Rouge. We went out for Amy's birthday, and all had high expectations -- including my friend Keshler who came all the way from Philadelphia just for this show.

They didn't play any bangers from the early years, focusing more on their later, more experimental sounds. In truth, they didn't play at all. Gerald spent the entire hour playing "air keyboard" with his left hand, fingers twittering in mid-air above the Triton, while his right periodically pressed a key or two. Kim Karli stood at her keyboard virtually motionless, hands either at her side or folded in front of her. Every once and a while she'd press a key.

As a long-time fan of the music who plopped down a good $15 of dole money for this, I thought this show was a complete farce. I do appreciate their aesthetic (this would have went over well as an art installation in a gallery, not a nightclub), but at the end of it all, this "performance" was smattering of pretension of the highest degree. No wonder they haven't played out in the States much. If they tried pulling off a show like this in Detroit, I think they'd be booed off the stage.

Take the money and run.
