Superman Returns!

Jul 23, 2006 14:16

Superman is my least favorite superhero.

I've never been one to believe in perfection. He's faster than a speeding bullet, stronger than a million men, and so on.

Bullets bounce off him as if he was coated in Teflon.

I have no use for such far-fetched Superheroes, especially one whose only weakness is an allergic reaction to a green stone from his home world.

Don't even get me started on Lois Lane.

Here is a strong woman who is incredibly independent and smart but falls into the same trap that DC sets for their females.

The only reason she loves Superman is because he IS Superman. What other reasons did she really have? Who wouldn't fall for a guy who saved others from crumbling buildings? Talk about swoonworthy.

GAG.

This was the bias that I went into Superman Returns with.

Not exactly how I left, though I was still very much muttering about why Lois loves Superman but not nearly as loudly.

For those who find themselves at the theatre with a decision to make. Step away from PoTC 2 and see Superman Returns instead. I assure you, you won't be disappointed. PoTC 2 was absurd and preposterous in ways that I just could not accept.

POSSIBLE SPOILER!

Of course, one of my main reasons for complaint is that Captain Jack Sparrow, Norrington, and Will Turner have a fucking 20 minute sword fight on a runaway watermill at perfect 45 degree angles until one of them jumps off and then the other two careen out of control.

Yeah, okay. /End Possible Spoiler

I didn't think that it would be possible for the Superman verse to come at this movie with an original plot or even decent actors. I was wrong on both counts. I urge you to keep a skeptical mindset when you enter the movie. You will be pleasantly surprised as you start to give the movie more and more credit as you go along.

Admittedly, the beginning of the movie feels like Smallville or even Lois and Clark, but do not give up hope!

Kevin Spacey plays a diabolical Lex Luther and his female sidekick is just over the line of dumb. Their interactions will amuse and confound all. Because what in the world is Lex Luther doing with that chit? And eventually, what is that chit doing with Lex Luther?

The dry wit exercised in the movie will have you laughing in your seat, I swear. It's been a long time since I've gone to the movies and laughed so much. Of course, I had good company so there's also that.

Do not be frightened away by Kate Bosworth's diminishing figure!

She plays a believable Lois Lane and gives her the right amount of strength and frailty.

Any questions that may rise during the first couple minutes of the movie will be answered in the exposition so don't worry so much. Even if you're not a big fan of superhero movies, you should most definitely give this one a try.

I was on the set for Spiderman 3 when they were filming in NY and I still don't have a strong urge to see it, but Superman is awesome. Don't miss it on the big screen. It won't be the same.
