FEATURING -
- STEELY DAN'S CAN'T BUY A THRILL.
EXAMPLE -
Dull? No, but cola-smooth, such that the various instrumental pieces roll off into ribbon-like arrangements, rhythmically sectioned but so cleverly that you lose the jar-and-jag of rougher percussion. It still pops, but the beat’s a bit more like a spool that the melody winds around than a sudden eruption of scissoring sound into the greater instrumentation. It’s a very mellow blend, overall; the strongest songs on the album tend to be those that make you long for that next note, even when you know it’s coming - but then, that’s the craft-signature of any pop song worth its salt.
