It is generally considered a necessary part of a proper upbringing.

[Steps away from the wall, holding out his hand.]

Not yet, no.

[Rests his other hand on the replica's shoulder.]

In most dances, one leads, and the other follows. You'll be leading.

It's the more practical role to learn, if you're beginning. And so long as its instructional, I do not mind assuming the other.

Okay... so my hand goes here?

Yes, though depending on the height differences between you and your partner, slightly further up or down is permissible as well.

The basic steps are simple enough, especially when one is used to movements in threes already.

Forward with your left foot, like this. Forward and out with your right. Then bring them together. Like a single sleight.

[tries it, frowning as he focuses]

Huh. That isn't hard.

Now step back with your right, like this, back and out with your left, then bring them together.

[does so] Like that?

Yes, that's it. The first set, then the second, then the first again. All other steps are a variation on those two.

And you just do it in time to the music? I can do that.

That's all.

[Lets him try the basic set a few more times.]

As the lead, it's up to you to decide how we move across the floor, as well.

Move across the floor? There's no pattern to it?
