All right, I have to take a break from memorizing Native American tribes. They just...won't go into my head anymore. I have confused Shoshone with Salish and Chumash with Choctaw one too many times to have any real interest in continuing to look at my study sheet. So I'm breaking in a variety of ways by:
Playing fabulous free games on AIM
Updating my livejournal (as if you couldn't tell)
Although this post is completely procrastination based, I do feel the need to modify my previous post with some new disturbing news. Remember my joy and amazement at the fact that USD actually let us spray-paint one of the areas of campus? The one that they will be tearing down within weeks to make way for new updated fabulous fitness centers and cafes? Ringing any bells?
For the first time, I was proud of my school. This is something universities should let their students do. Why? It made sense. Why not let the students enjoy themselves by making their (however temporary) mark on the school with something that's relaxing and gets us out of studying for finals for an hour or so?
The spray painting was glorious and had to be the most politically correct graffitti I have ever seen. Here's but a sampling of things put up:
Jesus is Love
Love people
Live free.
Peace people
Goodbye seniors.
Etc.
Now the designated area of spray-painting was pretty limited, so I feel rather confident in saying that I saw most of what was put up. And the people monitoring the whole thing were rather vigilant in making sure that things stayed "appropriate" (i.e. covering up the usual 4-20 references). And I was proud. I had contributed. Granted, under USD authorization, but it was the little amount of rebellion that they would allow us.
Guess what boys and girls? In true USD style of making absolutely no sense the administration has circulated an official notice that they will be painting over the graffitti. Yes, yes that's right. They are painting buildings which will be torn down within the month. Why, you may ask? Here's the official word from the Nazis, I mean administration:
"The items added are not in congruence with our USD values and are not things we want displayed in our residential areas."
Right. If you will casually glance upwards at the sampling of things put up...yup, yup, that's right. Apparently the Catholic institution wants no messages of peace, love, or religion. Honestly. There was nothing on those walls that requires an entire "white-washing" of the entire affair. Maybe an RA didn't catch a random 4-20 reference. Does this necessitate an entire paint job of the entire situation? Right. I thought not. Anyone else getting "1984" flashbacks? Anyone? Bueller?
Just another reason why I am looking forward to fleeing from this place in less than two weeks. Fleeing. Running with abandon. Far, far away.
