So, the good news is,
I arrived last night in between the storms - got on the train in Boston in a pouring rain, emerged from Penn Station to a gloriously unexpected lack of precipitation.
Then I got a cab and went straight to Joe's Pub, where I met up with a friend from college who'd agreed to come with me to see the monthly Our Hit Parade show, organized by Kenny Mellman (Herb from the brilliant comedy/cabaret duo, Kiki and Herb).
It's really sort of difficult to explain the show, except that it's friggin' hysterical. Kenny, along with two others, host the night of counting down the 'top ten hits' - I put that in finger quotes because they play a little fast and loose about that list, in order to get some bits in - but still, it is mostly the top of the charts songs, sung by insanely cracked comic musicians with a tendency to wear as little as possible.
While waiting for the early show to exit (The Verve Pipe are still around, who knew?), I could have sworn I saw Battlestar Galactica's Gaeta among the departing audience...but despite this reminder that, hey, I'm going to a club & show that have buzz and legendary status, I totally spaced on doing any celebrity spotting. My friend and I were having too much fun catching up, and then eating - we opted for the dinner and a show thing, to get reserved seats right by the stage - and before our entrees arrived, bam! the show was underway.
Joes Pub is tiny - seriously, TEENSY WEENSY, and they get a lot of people in there, considering they need room for waitstaff and roaming performers - but my god, too too much fun! NY area people, you must try to get to this show, it's just a hoot and a half - Kenny Mellman may be the biggest name, but the real star is Bridget Everett. She really kind of defies description, but you will laugh your ass off at/with her.
Anyhoo, checking my twitter feed this morning, I find out I had a brush with bandom and didn't even know it - Gabe Saporta of Cobra Starship was apparently there, and loved it...I wonder if he was sitting in the rape den? I hope Bridget molested him, that would be awesome!
Our Hit Parade's blog Today I'm hitting a museum during the storm, then tonight it's off to see Venus in Fur, the first of three, possibly four, plays I'm seeing while here.
I love NY - couldn't live here, but so glad it's nearby to visit often!
