I think being a PC requires some character downtime. Time when you sit around thinking your characters thoughts, having low stress-shoot the shit time with the other characters in game, doing stuff that does not further plot, but furthers your examination of who your character is.

This is super important for me. It's fun to be somewhat busy and have stuff to do, but I need to have down time to interact with others players, or just chill.

I've been happy at Mirror Mirror, for instance, to be able to just say "no" to plot hooks that don't interest me or my character, or to skip out on big town fights if I'm not feeling up to it, without getting any grief from anyone. There's lots going on that I'm invested in, so when I run into stuff that doesn't interest me, I try to pass it off to people who it will be fun for rather than tack it on to my "to do" list.

(Or, of course, think "you're insane, nobody should be doing that," and contemplate quietly murdering the plot hook and dragging his corpse behind a building.)

Also, while I know it's not practical for everyone, I suggest that the best way to keep in form to PC (as opposed to staff) is to *not stop.* Even while running my own campaign I have made sure to be PCing at least one other game at all times, and I advised my staff to do so as well. I think it's easy for staffers to forget what's fun for players if they don't keep playing themselves, often without realizing.
