This is an in-progress list of my favorite Doctor Who stories. Please feel free to add recommendations in the comments, I'm always looking for new things to read. I think that these are almost entirely Ten/Rose but I'd love some recommendations for Nine fic too.
Doctor/Rose:
Title:
Tea & DomesticityAuthor:
mrv3000 Summary: Sarah Jane is the voice of reason in a mad, mad universe.
Rating: PG
Spoilers: School Reunion
Quote: YEAH, YOU'RE MAKING TARDIS NOISES WITH YOUR MOUTH.
Reason for recommendation: Easily the funniest story in the fandom. She says it might be crack or parody but I think she's perfectly on spot with the voices of the Doctor and Rose.
Title:
Days and Hours Author:
rosa_acicularis Summary: Time travel and groceries.
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: Doomsday
Quote: His eyes are wide and dark, but there’s something there that wasn’t before, an unfurling awareness of bright things to come that somehow breaks her heart in a way the desperation never could.
Reason for recommendation: There's something about Rose's writing which captures your attention like nothing else. This story is painful and cute and perfectly brilliant, much like the rest of her work. After you read her stuff, you can stalk her journal for fic updates like I quite often do.
Title:
Worlds in Conjunction Author: marylane
Summary: The Doctor makes a slight miscalculation.
Rating: Teen
Spoilers: Doomsday
Quote: Because futures don’t belong to people, not even Time Lords. Futures belong to worlds.
Reason for recommendation: I sob each time I read this story. Each time, I think it'll hurt less but it doesn't. But I love it anyway, because it shows the best thing about our girl Rose Tyler, how strong she really is, with or without the Doctor.
Title:
L'excessive, Pass the Delicacy Please Author:
elsi_dissapear Summary: A missing scene after GitF
Spoilers: Girl in the Fireplace
Quote: She sips the coffee and things of Reinette, remembers the softness of her eyes and the color of her hair and thinks about her own end with the Doctor.
Reason for recommendation: I have a thing about post-GitF fics, I just love insights into the Doctor's actions and a look at the consequences. This story does an excellent job of showing Rose after the fact, but she's not too jealous or weepy. She's just Rose.
elsi_dissapear 's fics are really well written in general, her writing is extremely fluid and her stories always fly by too fast. It's like reading a story through a Monet painting.
Title:
How to Live Author:
misscam Summary: He's decided she will live. Everything else becomes a matter of how.
Rating: Mature
Spoilers: Vague for S1.
Quote: He's decided she will live. Everything else becomes a matter of how.
Reason for recommendation: This is my favorite story in Doctor Who fandom. This is quite a painful story but it's worth it to follow Rose till the end because she's brave and amazing but she's still so human. Sometimes while reading this I forget that this a story about Doctor Who because really it's applicable to everything about the human ability to endure and about the ability to heal.
Title:
The Last Great Adventure Author:
goldy_dollar Summary: Seems like the universe is making itself clear, innit? Crystal clear. Can have everything. Mum, Dad, a job… just can’t have you.
Spoilers: Doomsday
Reason for recommendation: I love the way this story is written with its twisty timeline. goldy_dollar's writing talent really comes through in this story. It's just a very well though out story that plays around with your emotions and leaves you reading it again and again.
Title:
Shadow of the VoidAuthor:
humansrsuperior Summary: The impossible had become possible, much to the Doctor’s astonishment, and he was still trapped in a daze of disbelief. It felt like a dream, and he had to continuously remind himself that it wasn’t.
Rating: PG-13
Spoilers: Early Season 4
Quote: He could feel Rose’s eyes on him like searing burns; every time he looked at her, he could see her anxiety all over her countenance. She was expecting something from him, waiting for it, and he was pretty sure he knew what.
Reason: One of my favorite reunion stories. I like the idea that everything won't be perfect the moment their eyes meet again. Also, one of my favorite characterizations of Martha.
Title:
AlmostAuthor:
avoria Summary: Impossible? Nah, that’s nothing. The Doctor can do impossible in his sleep. Frequently has, too. Some angsty but eventual feelgood stuff with Rose and Ten set after “Doomsday”.
Spoilers: Doomsday
Reason: This is such a well written story. Avoria has a way of describing things that if written by anybody else would be in the territory of purple prose but when written by her it's absolutely perfect.
Title:
The Process of BecomingAuthor:
kalleah Summary: "Life is a process of becoming, a combination of states we have to go through. Where people fail is that they wish to elect a state and remain in it. This is a kind of death." - Anais Nin
Reason: This is THE Doctor/Rose story for me. The plots, the characters, the locations will all stay with you days after you read the story. Easily the most intelligent Doctor/Rose story without being presumptuous.
Title:
Chaos Theory in Vortex Orbits in Relative Dimensions in Time and SpaceAuthor:
earlgreytea68 Summary: And then there came a day when Rose said she was having a baby. Hijinks ensue from there.
Rating: Various
Reason: I read this entire story yesterday. I can't describe how much I love this story. It's just so perfect, its tempered with humor and sorrow. It just describes the life that the Doctor and Rose lead so perfectly.
Title:
Good NightAuthor:
rosa_acicularisSummary: One for sorrow, two for joy. The Doctor, down the rabbit hole.
Rating: R
Spoilers: Through S4
Reason: Oh man, oh man. I really just wanted to recommend one story per author but there's no way not to recommend this. It's a sequel to Rose's
Do I Twist, Do I Fold, so read that first. It's the second in a series and I cannot wait for the third part. Just read everything else by Rose too, particularly
But Broken Lights.
