winter: bring it on

Nov 02, 2006 16:15

Escorted today. It's only two days after Halloween, but it's definitely winter. It was 16 degrees out there w/windchill. I bundled up well, but still came out with frozen feet ( Read more... )

Oy. Last year two friends and I escorted during a blizzard. Okay, maybe not an official blizzard, but it was snowing hard enough for the clinic to close early, and for us not to be able to take a cab back to campus (due to a +2 hour wait) and for our campus transportation system to be cancelled... and of course our main protester, Joe, was out in full force, undeterred in the least.

The only thing I think is a good tip, besides dressing warmly with lots of layers, obviously, is taking turns if you have enough people escorting to do that. One person goes inside and warms up for five minutes at a time - really helps to break it up.

"You'll wish it was this cold when you're burning in the FIRES OF HELL!!!"

Oh, Joe, I'm not a Christian, so I'm going to hell anyway. A little escorting can't make it any worse.

I've told the protesters that I'm Jewish before, so their Christian rhetoric means absolutely nothing to me. They always seem to turn mysteriously deaf - I guess it's not as okay to tell Jews they're going to burn in hell as those godless sinful atheists.

Our antis are like that too. We've got one guy out in shorts in the most insane weather. I don't get it. All that screaming about hellfire must keep 'em toasty somehow.

As far as tips for warmth; layers are my biggest thing. tights under jeans under baggy sweats. Hunter's socks over regular athletic socks. Thin stretchy gloves under real heavy-duty gloves.

Also, it's possible to find air-activated hand and foot heaters if you're really desperate; they're usually sold in sporting goods places, and last I got any, were about 50 cents each (one time use).

And I love a thermos of tomato soup with cheddar cheese chunks. Mmmm, yes.

I'm thinking of looking up some of those hand/foot warmers. And i definitely think there will be some cocoa next time.

Maybe it's the other way around: their high body temps have harmed their brains and made them crazee.

around here there 16F isn't too bad for the winter. That's 16F with the windchill; it was really something like 24 without windchill.

I can't deal with the leggings because I don't shave my legs. Leggings make my legs itch like crazy. I make up for it w/a very long coat.

Maybe try the 100% silk kind? I still have a set of long underwear made of silk that I got when I was fourteen or so to wear skiing and it is the best thing ever to wear when it's cold, and I can wear it right next to my skin with no irritation.

And those hand/footwarmers are also excellent.

I'm really excited -- I am planning on getting in on the next training session (in December, I think) so I will be escorting soon, too!

yay! maybe we can escort together. I used to escort w/Patrick all the time but now he has to stay home and watch the child.

I will have to get some of the silk kind. My dad swears by them.

I buy boxes of those hand warmers from Costco and stuff them in all my pockets. Sometimes it works too well.
