So Janel's 'Evening of Experimental Middle Eastern Dance' was last weekend and this weekend, her gal pal Sam and I went last night but had the brilliant idea of spending the day at Venice Beach beforehand, since the show was down there in Venice.
Worked out great. Must have been 30 degrees cooler, got there in less than an hour, packed a cooler full of drinks, a sandwich or two...ahhhh...
Janel's show itself was pretty cool. The opening number was a video of the woman who runs the program getting ready, then she came out on stage and stripped it all off. Sort of like the striptease during the opening credits at Rocky Horror.
As I've said before, I'm too much of a theater geek to really be trusted in the audience. For this one, I could not believe that they sent the stage crew out between numbers to change the gels in the lights on the two side poles. I understand that the pieces need their own colors, and that's fine. But mount some more lights! They came out with red handlights and switched about a dozen gels, that's just begging for confusion and mixed up colors.
Also, there was one piece with a box that opened up, and the crew spent ten minutes at the end of intermission figuring out the position of it. I guess they never spiked anything before.
Aside from all that, the show was pretty damn cool. Now I'm going to enjoy my Sunday.
