Character
Name:Dorothy Gale
Series:The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (the book)
Timeline: Right after clicking her heels three times
Canon Resource Links: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Dorothy Gale
Personality:

Dorothy is repeatedly described as sweet and innocent. She is willing to hear others problems and try to help them. She’s fairly naïve and is too trusting. When the Wicked Witch of the West enslaves her, she worries about the Tin Woodsman and the Scarecrow, which the Flying Monkeys damaged. When she is finally freed, she organizes the Winkies to put her friends back together. She also worries about the Wizard after he leaves in his balloon even though she considers him a humbug.

She is determined. Once she decides to do something, nothing will stop her. One of her first questions in Oz was how to get home. She did everything she had to do to get to the Emerald City, including going through dark woods, crossing ravines and rivers and nearly getting attacked by wild animals. Then, she traveled to kill the Wicked Witch of the West, even though she wasn’t sure she could kill anyone, even if it was to get home. After finding out the Wizard was a humbug, and having no way out of Oz, she traveled to find Glinda. The same steadfast determination shows up in the rest of the books.

She can be a bit of a dreamer and doesn’t always pay as much attention as she probably should. Because of this, she isn’t very good with directions. In The Road to Oz, the shaggy man asks her the way to Butterfield. She says that it’s either the second or third or fourth turn on the left. Later she says she’s been lost multiple times. Then in The Emerald City of Oz, Dorothy gets lost in Oz. On the bright side, she has realized the panicking and worrying won’t help, so she remains calm when lost.

While she is normally polite, she can be impertinent. When the Scarecrow said he couldn’t understand why she would want to leave a beautiful place like Oz for Kansas, her response was “That’s because you have no brains.” She also calls the Wizard a humbug. In Ozma of Oz she tells Bill the hen that her name can’t be Bill because Bill is a boy’s name and renames her Billina. Later when Billina is eating bugs, Dorothy scolds her and calls it shameful to eat living things. When Billina counters with humans eat dead things, Dorothy responds “we cook them” which makes a big difference even if she can’t explain it.

Strengths/Weaknesses:

+ She is used to camping and living off nuts and berries, after having spent over a month traveling in Oz.
+ She is kind and caring.
+ She cares a lot about animals and is good with animals.
+ She’s fairly brave and protective of those that are weaker.

- She has a poor sense of direction and gets lost easily.
- She is naïve and overly trusting.
- She is used to having her friends around and relying on them to help protect her.
- She is extremely homesick and will be pretty miserable when she arrives.

[the video is clearly accidently and all that is visible is the ceiling of Mother’s house. A young girl can be heard.]

What a queer place. Well, it’s certainly not home…or at least this isn’t my home. I wonder if I’m still in Oz. I hope not, I do so want to be in Kansas. I guess I’ll just have to try again. But first I need Toto. Toto, Toto, where are you?

[The video continues as she gets more and more frantic about her lost dog.]

Third Person Sample:

No one knew how to leave. It was the worst possible news for the girl. At least in Oz there had been hope. As soon as she arrived the townspeople had helped her. And while the Wizard was a humbug, she still had hope. She had journeyed for weeks and she was finally going home…but she ended up here.

None of the townspeople made any sense here. They used words she never heard of and wouldn’t explain them. She was alone except for a queer dog and an odd magical box filled with tiny people. While the small people tried to explain things to her, none could tell her a way home. She had tried clicking her heels, but her slippers must not work outside of Oz.

She tried to stay strong, like she had in Oz, but now she didn’t even have Toto. For all she knew he was lost in the desert. She sat down and started to cry. Everything was hopeless. She just wanted to see Aunt Em and Uncle Henry. She cried until she couldn’t cry any more. Her Smeargle tried his best to comfort her. She hugged it close. She wished the Scarecrow was here. He’d know what to do.

Then it dawned on her. Some of the small people said people did go home. They just didn’t know how. She’d find the way. She had to. Aunt Em and Uncle Henry were probably worried sick about her by now and it wouldn’t do to worry them any more.

She grabbed her Smeargle’s paw and started walking. There was no way that sitting in the middle of New Bark Town crying would get her home. She could only hope for the best now. If all went well, she would be home before she knew it and Toto would be with her.
