I don't really remember him being devout and humble (granted, it was a few years ago that I read it) but I definitely remember the part about ripping a monster's arm off. Early English stories are crazy hardcore. ;-)

Beowulf would be very high on my list as well....although I've always had a soft spot for Achilles as well. :D
