“Five more minutes.”

JUST A GLANCE
Kyle Langford & Mara Harper

He looked so deep in thought that she just couldn’t help herself and before she could convince herself it was a bad idea she was lifting the camera and taking the picture. Without lifting his gaze he asked her what she was doing. Mara shrugged and dropped her gaze to the device in her hands as it spat out the picture, pulling it free and holding it down at her side while it developed. It wouldn’t develop any faster if she shook it, in fact it might blur and degrade if she did, and so she would wait.

They were waiting for Cole and Nerys to finish their meeting upstairs and the underground lot wasn’t exactly fascinating. Mara was glad she’d brought the camera along on a whim. From the look of Kyle’s stony expression he wasn’t glad about it but then it was always so hard to figure out exactly how he felt about things. Even with her empathy it was a challenge. That was so refreshing. Glancing down she checked the picture. Still not developed. Not quite yet. Shapes were beginning to clear up and she could just make out the edges of his body in the shot, the downward angle of his head and the almost casual way he had his hands in his pockets. Only casual to people that didn’t know him. Mara knew better.

Kyle was restless even if he was standing still. She had noticed he only put his hands in his pockets when he was thinking, when he was troubled. He didn’t fiddle exactly but she’d noticed he liked to keep his hands busy at times like these. When Cole was out of his sight and they were beyond the safety of the Hyperion that was when Kyle was at his most agitated, his most uncomfortable.

Mara checked her watch. “Five more minutes,” she told him without really needing to. Kyle would have been keeping track of the time in his own mind from the second the Alpha male and Beta female had left his sight. He humoured her with a small dip of his chin that passed for a nod. Mara smiled and lifted the picture. Fully developed now the lines were much clearer and the shadows were defined. She could make out the detail in his sweatshirt and the thoughtful lines on his face. Not a bad shot at all.
