WHEN I GOT THE NEWS
IT BLEW OUT A FUSE IN MY HEAD
Kyle Langford & Mara Harper
prompt: floodgate. follow our brothers by michael salvatori

Their job tonight is to watch, stand guard and alert the others close by to any danger that might creep up on them from an unexpected direction. They won’t give their enemies that chance. To his right Mara stands, her eyes closed as she reaches out to feel things that others cannot feel, and a crease appears along her brow as he watches her. Concentration. Kyle follows her gaze when her eyes open and he sees the shadows shift, moving like liquid smoke. There is something down there. He hears the rumble of a growl in Mara’s throat and watches the gold dance in her eyes predatorily. She tenses and moves closer to the edge of the roof atop which they stand.

His hand catches her by the elbow. “Our job is to stand guard,” he reminds her straightforwardly, his voice level and firm.

“We won’t be able to warn them in time,” she tells him, a quiet kind of desperation in her voice that he was not expecting. Still he holds on to her, his eyes narrowing. “By the time we’ve sent the signal, it will be too late,” she insists, pulling on her arm to get it out of his grip.

Kyle holds on. “Mara.” Her name is a low warning but she holds his gaze, showing defiance, and in doing so proving to him without a shadow of a doubt that something is truly wrong. He releases her then. In an instant she is moving, only a dip of her head showing her gratitude before she is running towards the edge of the roof, closer to the drop that will lead down into the side street.

A glance over his shoulder towards where the others are waiting is all Kyle allows himself before he pursues his companion, silently hoping and praying that her instincts are right.
