"Clark, I didn't just ask you here tonight to have dinner."

"You didn't?" Clark wondered why his mouth was so dry as he stared across the flickering candlelight into Lex's deep, blue eyes.

A smile curved Lex's lips, but even Clark could see the danger therein. "No. I have a proposal for you."

"A proposal?" Clark gripped the table underneath its cloth. As much as he loved Lex, he wasn't sure he was ready to contemplate marriage. He hadn't even graduated high school yet!

"Yes." Clark felt the air flee from him and relief rush in as Lex revealed a folder and slid it and its contents across to Clark. "I would like to make you my partner," he said, and this time, Clark didn't see the danger in his smile.

Lex beamed across the table at Clark. He knew the boy was nervous, but he was also determined to show him he had nothing to fear from him. He did have another proposal to make one day, he thought, lightly tapping the bulge in his breast pocket where a certain, small box lay, but that proposal would have to wait for another ( ... )

They made their way to the kitchen with some stumbling and giggling and unneeded whispers. The dark seemed to promote all of it, though it wasn't really any place different than it was before ( ... )

Oooh, I really love this one. Poor Lex, he really needs to learn about the simpler pleasures. Maybe he should go camping with Clark somewhere - and someplace a little more remote than say the campgrounds at Yosemite.

Business partner, moral guide, a social relationship? Lex of course would have a folder for all of these complete with bar charts and various possible outcomes. So for me it is a lovely scene and though I think I know where he is heading it is the hint of a ring only that gives a clue? Am I right?

Also, I find your flashing CLex pic from series 3 disturbing. Is there any possibility of getting it to fade from on to another, please?

As always, it is lovely. Lex has such a large reserve of moral fibre to keep his hands off Clark, particularly by candlelight and groping in the dark.
